BaII cleans up THH's mess [spoilers!]

So what I did was move everything into Armenelos, upgrade its warrior to a maceman, and triple-whip a maceman there from scratch. I moved the remaining scouting boats toward our land, not that it'll help, and the damaged galleon up in the north I promoted and put on the one tile Fintourist can't see it from; it's basically checkmated though. I wish we could somehow raze some of our former cities, but the mechanics won't allow it.

Just out of curiosity, did you whip our cities when Fintourist declared war? I noticed Armenelos didn't have any whip unhappiness before I whipped it this turn.

This is what I did this turn:

Those units can attack one or both of Toledo and Barcelona and/or move back into Armenelos in whole or in part next turn. Unfortunately, Toledo is on a hill, so Fintourist does have visibility of that mini-stack. Both cities are still in revolt, though, so can't whip; they can only be reinforced if Fintourist has a loaded boat in range. Each of our former cities is garrisoned by one janissary; Barcelona has a ship docked as well. The two groups southeast of Armenelos contain four janissaries, one catapult and two janissaries respectively.

Our galleon was destroyed and we will probably lose both galleys this turn, too, though we have a caravel (our last ship) in position to counterattack one of the victorious vessels if favourable.

Azza is about to pillage our copper, leaving us with archers and catapults as our best units. I offered him peace in exchange for 50 gold per turn. I would like to be able to keep whipping macemen and make this war cost Fintourist. If we capture any cities this turn, we should immediately whip the best unit we can in each.

Anyway, that's all I've got; my goal is simply to defend well and make this war cost Fintourist as much as possible: ie., delay the inevitable. I figure making him recapture some of our cities is a good way to do that, plus it would restore to us iron in case Azza doesn't accept peace. Whether this will be possible remains to be seen.

Retook Barcelona.

Here's a picture of what I did last turn:

Fintourist had reinforced Toledo and Barcelona with an additional janissary each, meaning I could realistically only take one of them. Toledo was on a hill and had a City Garrison janissary, so Barcelona it was. The defenders consisted of a 25% fortified unpromoted janissary and a 0% fortified Combat II janissary; no cultural defence bonus since the city just came out of revolt. I attacked with our one catapult first to get some damage in on both units; that took the blank janissary (defending) to 6.7/9 and the Combat II one to 8.4/9. Then I promoted a maceman to City Raider II and took 47.3% odds against the latter. I won. I promoted a second maceman to City Raider II and attacked the first janissary at 70.8% odds to take the city. I immediately whipped a maceman, and moved in two more.

I got a little derpy with the defence of Armenelos, which Fintourist's stack can attack; I whipped a crossbowman there instead of a maceman, thinking archery units didn't suffer the -25% penalty from the janissary's special quality. I also gambled a bit, moving only two other macemen into the city, in addition to the one I whipped last turn. If Fintourist attacks, it'll be one catapult and six janissaries against three macemen and a crossbowmen; 60% cultural and the river defence bonuses.

In other news, Azza took peace in exchange for 50 gold-per-turn. That's a lot, but I wanted to make the offer sufficiently enticing that he wouldn't wait a turn to pillage our copper first and then re-offer, or just press on. In the event, I did recapture our iron, but neither was that assured, nor that it will remain ours. To the east, Fintourist captured that one island city, defended by a single macemen, at the cost of one janissary; fair enough. I deleted the workers there, 'cause he would've just captured them anyway. I'm trying to lure his frigate into a trap with a galley, not that I think the trap (another galley and a caravel, the last of our navy) will necessarily be successful. There's little else for our navy to do; it can't reach our coast to be able to do anything more useful with all Fintourist's fast-moving, powerful ships in the area. By the way, Fintourist switched to, uh, a government civic and Nationhood, so it looks like he remains on the war-path with ... someone. He wouldn't have done it just to finish us off, I'm sure.

Now to see whether he takes Armenelos on account of my risk-taking. I guess you should actually be back from vacation by now, eh, BaII? So the game is yours again. There, I captured a city for you, and got an enemy off your back; a fairly successful three turns. Just remember to whip macemen everywhere every turn and we'll at least go out with a bang!

I didn't play it, 'cause you're back, BaII, but I opened up the save to see - sorry, BaII, but Armenelos has been taken. Looks like I should have put that spare macemen in there after all, and the crossbow whip was as I said derpy. Sorry! Should've bothered to sim it.

yeah that 50 gpt gift? yeah it puts me in the negative for gold so I might lose some units from strike so I had to beg for gold from everyone else. It's fine though, hopefully I can take out a few more of these cities, that are being swamped by culture.

You're in the negative for gold?? I was fine. Probably because we lost all the capital's cottages, which was not intended. I'm still really ticked with myself about that - if only I had bothered to run a combat sim - I looked at the combat log, and I'm fairly certain the one extra mace plus the mace instead of crossbow would have saved the city. <Sigh>

BaII, just wanted to say thanks again for taking over for me when I was in a rough spot in RL. It was much appreciated! I'm just sorry I didn't leave you a better civ to take over.

Don't worry about it, I did a even poorer job warring against Fin.

My postgame analysis basically ended up in Fintourist's thread (it's not spoilery so whatev). Note the fun award I gave myself!

I am an awful Civ player. smile
