So is William going to freak later on if he sees that that island of 'his' is suddenly encroached by commodore?

Perhaps - but I actually expect Commodore to have more of a reaction. Conquering islands is the very definition of a naval war - and on top, William's been rather gimped by the war with retep. In Commodore's shoes, I'd definitely be willing to fight for land against William.

So, the AP gives everyone of the AP faith contact with each other? I don't think I've ever seen that before, or at the least just don't remember it.
Also, Pooter about to invade nakor, Dtay getting his Lib slingshot ready, Ichabod potentially to still carry his slow attack through to hit William, William and Commodore contesting fur island. Looks to be exciting times ahead!
Am I missing something, or is Mindy's advice to William insane? "Don't try to colonize the big, empty, productive island right next to you, it's too much trouble fighting to ensure Commodore half a map away doesn't take it. Instead you should focus on eliminating two of your neighbors, which will certainly go over much more smoothly!" Giving Commodore a free base next to your core on an island obviously within your sphere of influence so that you can wage a grinding war of attrition against near tech-parity opponents with large armies sounds like an incredibly dumb strategy. Especially if you might want an army available on the mainland to deter the growing expansionist threat who just ate your eastern neighbor. Maybe Mindy is simply irrationally terrified of veteran players?
Mindy always calls for blood. It may be that he thinks more units will die in slaughter (productively or not is immaterial next to the scale of carnage) by continuing the current conflict than seeking one by sea.

I agree Bob, Mindy provides a good stimulus for William to explain his thoughts, but Mindy is waaaay off base occasionally. Several times I have typed a response about silly suggestions from Mindy in their thread and thought better of it.
honestly though i would go with mindys advice. granted partly i know how commodore will react and ichabod's determination to take a chunk off william, but eh
Even with metagame knowledge, Mindy's advice doesn't make much sense. The mythic "24-city empire" can only be achieved by taking out retep and retep's other neighbor whose name I forget, right? And taking them out, if even possible, would require dozens and dozens of troops which would leave WLP's core wide open for Ichabod. Even if Commodore has some sort of super-scary reputation for not making peace or whatever, there's no way he'll be a tougher target, not with his terribly overstretched supply lines and current reliance on ancient age units.
The problem with Commodore is that he plays well as long as he has a shot at winning. As soon as he doesn't have that - or feels like that - he will go on an endless war against whoever was last to attack him - or upset him by whatever irrational reason he can find. Which is simply annoying to deal with and can easily cost you any chance to win the game or get back into it if you yourself are only middle of the pack. So even though I don't think Mindys advice is the best I certainly can understand why he doesn't want to give Commodore any reason to start that "endless war".
(And that attitude of Commodore is also the reason I would stay away from playing another game with him. If he is your neighbour you can be nigh certain that you both will lose the game because of him.) |
