[SPOILERS] Small Wunders and Izzy of Inca: The fat lady sings

Holy crap! Master Commodore's a lightweight! No Knights to worry about either!

Clearing out Retep still seems the better choice especially with those units out of position. Why's he protecting that forest when we can just walk up on hills?

As you said, if Master Commodore gets into any trouble with Scooter that's our time to assert ourselves on the island. Maybe before that if the battle with Retep goes well and we don't have a serious response from Bacchus. Have to put those Krilliphants and MindyBanes to the test. hammer Seeing that info on tech and power it does seem like he's overextending himself. That middling power is protecting 17 cities while exerting himself on our island.

Interesting report. coffee

Yeah, now that dropbox is back, last turn we had this situation:

I think we could have taken those two 'phants down. We have a cat in Magic Flute to weaken them, then 1 C1 longbow to the south, then 1 longbow to the SE could promote to G2 and move W-N to attack without the river penalty. And then I think there were even another 2 bows in the city. The only problem is that it just grinds hammer for hammer and we probably get an even trade at best, or at worst Comm can clean up whatever we win with very easily.

(Btw I still regret that I had a Ballistaphant named after me that never saw combat in PB8. lol)

There's a lot going on here. Ichabod switched to an interesting mix of civics, notably away from slavery. But every unit he builds will have +4 exp. (+7 with barracks, +9 with stables).

It looks like Mackoti spawned a Merchant and bulbed economics, switching to FM in his golden age. Free Market is even buffed in RBMod! It gives an additional +25% trade route yield now, even though it is already extremely powerful at the time you get it in BtS. (Up to when you have State Property.) I didn't show it but someone has a GNP in the 1300's and it's likely to be him.

Plako ate another city from Dhalphir and the general shows he's doing some significant fighting.

We got iron. So where is it?

We have one source in our culture, but just barely! And nowhere we can take advantage of the hammers. That iron does give a reason for being for the eastern fort city though. I'm not sure whether to get on that, but I'm inclined not to prioritize it before trying to eat Retep. I still like a lot that we need no defenders in Die Walkure, because we have enough advanced warning to move defenders from elsewhere if needed. On the other hand, Ichabod could settle around there any minute.

Iron around Retep and Bacchus:

Ichabod is showing Engineering which will really add to his surprise attack options.

I'm not sure about our next tech. Going for Engineering ourselves is tempting. It might give a 1-turn jump on Retep since it allows more options to attack from an invisible tile. This is in addition to the other benefits: defensive maneuverability, ability to whip pikes.

Alternatively CoL -> CS is a free large economic bonus from Bureau, though it does require a switch away from Vassalage. If we were playing for the long haul, surely we'd want to invest in courthouses by now. Aesthetics -> Lit is not too expensive and the HE would be extremely nice to build nearly 1-turn knights out of Turandot.

There's also Alphabet. Though, I'm not that sold on the value of spies with no sight radius for scouting. They could easily be a false negative: everything seems safe but we actually missed the key tile. There's Compass for cheap harbours (meh, maybe if we had coastal cities). Banking and Gunpowder are even possible, though they seem way too far out there for now.

So what's going on with Commodore?

He settled another city to the south. And the dreaded Mindybanes got left in range of a C1 spear! It has to cross a river, but their chance is still 65%. You can't give that to me and have me not take it:

And we discovered that Bathurst only has the CG1 crossbow defending. With this info, after some thought, I'm going to go for it all-in:

So there are 3 lbs, 1 cat, 2 axe, 1 chariot, and the redlined spear that can attack. Also the two longbows guarding the worker can get G2 and join into if necessary, so we could hit with 5 longbows.

If we could take Bathurst, it's not entirely clear we should keep it and not raze, though it would probably be too tempting to pass up.

Note Magic Flute is completely empty, though it could have 3 longbows next turn: 1 built and 2 from the mainland. He could theoretically take it if he unloads 2 workers and a 2-mover next turn out of 2 galleys. Or there's always tricks with a GG. But I'm willing to take the chance he isn't planning on that.

Your move, Krilliphants. Can Comm have a trick that can save Bathurst? If he does, and the elephant was a clever bait somehow, I just bow down I guess. lol

Commodore has Compass and I think there's a pretty good chance he either has or is going for optics and caravels, and may try to cut off our reinforcement channel eventually.

Death to the Mindybanes!

Yeah, we don't need alphabet.
COL - looks like we're still almost 60% break even so that can also wait.
CS - strong contender.

We're showing a very nice power premium over Bacchus right now. Engineering for the mobility - if we have opportunities, that'll help us leverage them the most. Voting Engineering.

Are you redeploying our 10 cats or will you be building some more? Time for the 3/4 build and switch production trick. It would also serve to not spook Bacchus until we're ready to move on Retep. He's clearly been in builder mode since his last swipe at Retep and he also doesn't seem to be responding to our buildup. I sense resignation after his failed Retep attack.

Question for you: when does Barbiere's culture expand?

We're waiting on a reload because Commodore apparently made a "fatal" misclick.

It expands very soon! Maybe even this turn, and if not the next. I don't think it will take tiles from Suit Up in any realistic time frame though, they've had too many turns to build culture. So the effect will just be those couple of neutral tiles to the south I think.

Thanks, I was asking to see what the culture picture would look like after Suit Up's culture was gone:

Still very busy at work but I had a bit of time to look at our Retep invasion. His territory is so small that there's not too many variables really. Nevertheless some things to aim for:

1. Engineering makes everything more effective.
Assuming C2 Knights vs C2 Spear/C2 Axe/CG2 Archers with full fortify:
2. Against Angkor Thorm C2 Knights will get 74%/96%/97% against a C2 spear/C2 Axes/CG2 Archers assuming full fortify.
3. Against Hariharalaya (20% culture) we get 70%/89%/94% on C2 spear/C2 axes/CG2 archers.
4. Against Suit up with 0% culture we get 69%/88%/86%.
5. Against Yasodharapura (40% culture) we get 35%/70%/70%.

So whatever units that we can corral into either of those two cities will be easy wins for us. Hitting Suit up first really splits his forces to our advantage.

If Retep builds walls, we can always bring in catapults given the short distances for both of those cities.

After the fall of Suit Up, our objective should be to cut the copper supply to Angkor Thorm and Hariharalaya. Once that is accomplished (and looks like we can just cut/occupy 1-2 roads then Retep will be only able to produce archers or HA both of which our Knights will get 95+% odds on.

If the assault on Suit up is done by cats and LBs, our Knights could move instantly onto either Yasodharapura or forking the other two cities (with Engineering). If Retep retreats from Suit up towards Yasodharapura we'd likely catch the retreating units on flatlands with our Knights.

Landing our units 1N or Suit up rather than 1NE might help keep more units out of Suit Up depending on whether he's roaded the iron hill tile. I'm also guessing that he hasn't researched Iron working yet. I choose the NE tile because of the road, but 2 combat engineers would accomplish the same.

We probably want to use catapults on Yasodharapura unless we've decimated his army at Suit up.

We should keep Angkor Thom. We should also consider the possibility of razing Forever Machine if the battle goes well enough and Bacchus hasn't responded militarily to our build up. Planting 3S2E of Yasodharapura would create a nice amount of space between Bacchus and us. Of course Col Conscience should also go.

Well I would have to guess that that fatal misclick was moving that galley the wrong way.

Excited and curious to see if we'll capture Bathhurst.

T153; his 2 elephants were SE of Bathhurst
SOT154: he left his MindyBanes SE of Bathhurst as what now appears to be an intimidation unit.
Krilliphants and/or LB inside of Bathhurst.
SOT155: The Krilliphants & LB move into the galley. So why's the galley still parked there? Unless there's another galley.
EOT155: We kill the so-called MindyBanes and move all-in on Bathhurst.

So I'm guessing that this didn't happen since the galley is still there. There's probably another galley.

So:
T153: 2 elephants were SE of Bathhurst
SOT154: Krilliphants and LB move into Bathhurst and load into galley and move SSW of Bathhurst.
SOT155: Krilliphants and LB move 4 tiles away from Bathhurst. That could mean 1NW of his second island city.
EOT155: We kill the MindyBanes and move all-in on Bathhurst.
Result: He's too far away to get the Krilliphants and LB into the city.

I guess I'm pointing out 2 things.
1. The galley positioning means that he's 3T away from coming in on the south side of Magic Flute. But I guess that we'll see that next turn. A GG galley could be 4-move or 5-move which means that theoretically he could hit us out of the fog so we need a unit in there if we believe that he has a GG and it could be on this side of the world.
2. The Krilliphants and LB are only 1T out of range. For consideration on whether we keep Bathhurst or not. I'd really like to keep it, and with LBs vs not-Knights/middling power why not?

Master Commodore can't really do anything clever with galley chaining can he? Hmmmm, he could galley chain units to move quickly or near-instantly between his two cities,....maybe that's what the fatal misclick was. That would explain the extra galley. He really couldn't do anything with galley chaining on our side of the island without us seeing it so that's no threat.

Picture worth a thousand words and all that. If we position a LB on that hill NE of his new city we should be able to see what he's up to a little better. Not suggesting detracting from the conquest of a Canadian city though.
