Just like the state of Georgia saved a wad of cash by outsourcing the state IT support services to IBM. They did manage to reduce call volume. Service was so terrible compared to what the state used to deliver on its own that lots of people stopped putting in support requests altogether. Yay? Must have saved them money if everyone stopped using the services. Of course individual agency IT budgets probably got whacked as they picked up the full support costs. Maybe that was the intent all along. FAIL.

That's exactly what they did, they contracted out the job to a major company who vastly over-inflated the price of the job (reading the scandal in the Grauniad they quoted the US governments accountant's office as saying that the typical contracted out job at federal level is c.80% dearer than an in-house alternative).

Look at any modern scandal involving government overspending on a project, from PFI in the UK, pork-barrell military spending in the US, spending on semi-state bodies in Ireland, you'll see the problems universally stem from corporate capture of state functions & governments.

Edit: Oops, didn't realise that was the point you're making. I'll leave up my post as a monument to my lack of reading comprehension today.

All of these are peanuts compared to the staggering scope of graft that Putin and his cronies are putting into the Sochii Olympics. They've spent billions paving a single road and virtually all contracts are lining the pockets of his cronies.

We should do what Venezuela and Bolivia has done, and embark on an aggressive nationalization of private industries...it has been so free of scandal and done such wonders for their economy. Surely Kanye has an opinion on this mischief.

All really big things are wasteful. I do find the talking points about "let business run it, they know how to be efficient" to be hilarious as I think anyone who has worked for a large corporation would agree. Particularly since once you're publicly traded there's no longer any correlation between running your business well and success.

Generally speaking, the greater issue with government is whether or not its evil. I don't mind inefficiency so long as they're not trying to kill everyone.

So if they are trying to kill everyone, you absolutely insist on total efficiency ?

Having experience with both the public and private sectors, I agree its silly to think corporations are inherently more efficient. IMO the reason to outsource is specialization; its very expensive to develop core competencies in certain areas. The reason to "insource" something is because it fits with the mission's critical success factors (all apologizes for the buzz phrase). So for example most companies in the US have outsourced IT because its a large, expensive endeavor with constantly shifting technologies. They still have an internal IT department to ensure the vendor is meeting their commitments. If you don't do that well, you get what you deserve...which is my admittedly ignorant opinion of what's going on right now with healthcare.gov.
