Sample bias...in fact that question has no place on that sort of poll.
That said, that is an awful lot of responses. I wonder how many of them also go to CFC.

I wonder how many of them have played any civ games.

Heh, I'll say... ask a bunch of questions specifically related to how you play Civ5, then end with a question about which Civ game you prefer. Not really a contest.
Honestly I'm surprised the percentage that didn't vote for Civ5 was as high as 15% (well over 1000 votes).

I'd be curious to know that too. I suspect less than 50% though.

Oh, I don't doubt that most of them have played Civ5. I wonder how many have tried multiplayer though. Certainly it's not possible to run a game as large as Pitboss 18 via Giant Multiplayer Robot (aka Hotseat). I know several friends that do play Civ5 multiplayer regularly, though I doubt any of them visit /r/civ regularly.

Heh, somewhat amusing reading the responses.

Who is the guy that picked Civ 1 as their favorite?

Someone let grandpa on the computer again...
Come now, the average person who played Civ1 when it came out was probably born in the 70's. They might have children, but they'd be unlikely to have teenage grandkids yet.

And again...

I was a bit disappointed there wasnt a question about multiplayer Civ. I have basically stopped playing single player and only play multiplayer with friends. I also noticed that people very rarely post about multiplayer on the subreddit.

The problem I have with mp is that my friends and I will start one, but it is hard to get everyone on the same time to keep the match going. And random lobby is great, but the problem there is it is hard as hell to sit there for 6-7 hours when there are no breaks. So the matches there usually end with everyone leaving around medieval.
If only there were a way to play multiplayer Civ where you didn't have to sit at the screen for 6-7 hours without breaks.

...It's not like Pitboss exists in realisty for civ 5.
I mean, there is a program labelled pitboss, but it sure as fuck isn't pitboss.

Its actually amazing how obvious it is that our corner of the world is out of touch with the mainstream.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. As Sirian's recent history lesson in the BE topic points out, RB started out as variant scum. It went mainstream for a little while because Civ4 is a game more tailored to that type of player but we're back to being variant scum again.
I honestly think the primary lesson is that Civilization as a concept is a lot of fun and if all you know is Civ5 then well, there you go.
FWIW, I played a lot of Civ1 and I don't have any grandkids.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

Most of people who didn't like Civ5 dropped out of the online community for the other games as they are too old. So this poll doesn't mean anything. Some polls that really matter are the "best game of all time" from a mainstream site that everyone goes to so people who dropped out of the community can vote. And as I've said before Civ2 beat 3 and 4.

I think its a stretch to say any online poll of gamers is relevant. There's a huge self-selection bias no matter how you slice it.
