Oxy is the biggest culprit. Thoth is also holding things up regularly.

I posted in Thoth's thread saying that multiple players were tired of his apparent peace time split. Hopefully it'll stop.

I'm not sure there is a peacetime split. He sucks at playing turns though. Maybe he wants to maintain a split with Commodore which I'm actually fine with, just don't suck at playing turns.

I mean I'd prefer if everyone would stop playing clock games, but to me the issue is more that its pretty apparent neither Oxy nor Thoth can commit to a turn every 24 hours. I suggest they solicit some teammates to help out or we just stop wasting everyone's time and give the game to TBS.

Don't get me wrong, I'm having fun when I actually get a turn but I have zero interest in playing a 6 player game with a turn every other day and zero communication from the players who are holding thing up.

t155 - All we are saying is give peace a chance

So we offered Oxy this peace deal, he declined, played his turn and then reoffered.

We graciously accepted. The sanctimonious douchebags among you will be pleased to note he did spite 3-pop whip both cities on his turn. Not only does it accomplish the primary war aims but it equally importantly does so without sacrificing the lion's share of the army. It doesn't leave a ton of the army left after garrisoning the new cities + distributing units to other border cities but it does mean 1. That TBS doesn't know where all of our power is and 2. The cities can shift focus from offense to defense. We whipped a settler this turn to go ahead and fill in the culture gap and that will probably be the border with Oxy for a while.

Its worth noting that Middlemarch nee Slicks came with a Granary, Courthouse and Lighthouse and Hogsmeade nee Paddy Simcox looks like this:

Oxy, bro, you're Creative. Would it have killed you to build some effing Libraries? That Hogsmeade has a totally-unnecessary-in-a-properly-garrisoned-border-city Ball Court but no Forge or Library... man.

I think its worth recapping the two wars we've fought recently.

Lost: 5 Knights a Horse Archer and a Maceman (570 hammers)
Gained: 6 cities, 3 with full buildings intact and no turns of revolt, plus burned one other city.

That feels almost mackoti-esque. shades

Anyway, here's a look at the new western border of the Ottoman empire:

Beyond that, just preparing as best we can to deal with the seemingly inevitable coming storm back east and still defend against a potential Oxy counter-attack. I think we're done with significant offensive operations for this era - if we attack anyone else, it will be with units that go boom.

Here's the situation on the TBS border:

The arrows point to concerning worker actions. Both roads north of the city are new and while Noble thinks the worker on the mine is windmilling, it seems more likely that he's roading. There are 6 knights and 4 Keshiks that just disappeared but the bigger concern is that he's 2 turns to Military Tradition and already has Rifling. We've got Knights headed to that front though with three invasion points to worry about (not shown above - Axis Mundi) I forsee some pain in the near future. I still think he's smarter to attack Thoth or Oxy but there's no question he's had better relations with both of those two this game than us. Meh, fuck John Wayne.

We did birth a Great Artist last turn as stated, so we can fire the 2-man GA whenever. Obviously it would be moronic to do so before Mount Olympus and Baltia come out of revolt, so that will wait at least 6 turns. More likely we'll wait until after Steel is in (~12t) and then use the GA to clean up Banking and PP en route to Rifling and eventually Assembly Line. If we live that long, TBS will probably be building Apollo, but the game is more fun if I don't worry about that sort of thing. That said, my interest in staying positive has meant I haven't discussed the state of other players in a bit so here's some graphs (Thoth recently banged some EP on us and we lost his graphs but Thoth is virtually irrelevant to us) and the tech screen:

Vs. Commodore: Up - Alphabet, Chemistry. Down - Drama, Theology, Banking.
Vs. Thoth: Up - Alphabeet, Engineering, Gunpowder, Literature, Chemistry. Down - Banking.
Vs. Oxy: Up - Polytheism, Monotheism, Aesthetics, Literature, Philosophy, Archery, Horseback Riding, Guilds, Chemistry. Down - Paper, Education.
Vs. dtay - who cares
Vs. TBS: Up: Engineering, Chemistry. Down - Music, Nationalism, Paper, Education, Liberalism, Banking, Economics, Replaceable Parts, Printing Press, Rifling.

So yeah, its basically between Turkey and Rome for 2nd place.

Any questions?

He's totally windmilling man. TBS read my primer on windmills and why they rock with Replaceable Parts. wink

The strip of culture north of Middlemarch will disappear, it's bugged. So we'll get an even border there at the edge of the water.

I had basically the same chat with Lewwyn and Noble over the space of 4 days, so it seems appropriate if I just post it here as a "how did we get here" post rather than doing a long essay. So here you go (its relatively short for those who usually skip chatlogs)

The most important part - if you read nothing else - is my long bit at the end.

Gaspar: alright
i cant look at this game anymore
the empire has just enough potential
that the fact that tbs has already won
is depressing
NobleHelium: well next time don't suck
Gaspar: you can say that
but i honestly don't think
if you took away the biggest mistakes
tbs still wins the game
NobleHelium: i mean tbs played well for sure
but i don't see him at the same level as seven or mackoti
Gaspar: hes not seven or mackoti
NobleHelium: which are really the only guys who can win the game over us and we just can't do anything about
Gaspar: but hes on the level right below that
but you put a player of that skill level
and he had 2 things happen for him
NobleHelium: i mean i guess pindicator's death
Gaspar: that we had no control over
NobleHelium: benefited him a lot
Gaspar: pindicators death
benefitted him almost as much as thoth
NobleHelium: yes
Gaspar: except he didn't have to expend any resources
so it benefitted him way more
and the ind guys
NobleHelium: that's why you don't generally rush your neighbor
Gaspar: letting him get henge
NobleHelium: because the other guy wins
Gaspar: yep
the mistakes we made
NobleHelium: kinda like sulla i suppose
Gaspar: i mean the biggest thing
was losing the two scouting units
NobleHelium: yes i agree
that was terrible
Gaspar: and im not taking any blame
for losing an 80/20 vs a lion
and a 99.1 vs a barb warrior
the only big mistake we made that was preventable
i think was going for IW -> Cal
over currency
and that was us letting mack and krill's offhand suggestions talk us into it
i mean
maybe we dont get MoM without it
and without mom maybe we're further behind
but delaying currency
just fucking killed us
NobleHelium: the problem was that
you kept playing
as if you weren't delaying currency
Gaspar: you say that
NobleHelium: i do say that
Gaspar: but look at the fucking map
we took 6 cities for nothing
and we're cre
and we're still 3rd in land
if we stopped expanding
NobleHelium: well you claimed some land that you couldn't hold near tbs
Gaspar: we'd be dtay
NobleHelium: so that wasn't useful
Gaspar: it was one city
NobleHelium: yeah but you stretched to get it
Gaspar: the other extended claims
we kept
NobleHelium: so it could have been two cities in closer locations
Gaspar: where
NobleHelium: MOAI CITY
OMG
yeah i'm not over that
Gaspar: ovaltine was long since settled by then
NobleHelium: is the main thing
i don't remember that
Gaspar: thats because
we didnt have eyes on it
by the time we had eyes on it
NobleHelium: well you were too focused on tbs
Gaspar: it was way way way too late
yes
but again
this goes back to the scouting
NobleHelium: yes it's partially the scouting
Gaspar: if that chariot doesn't die
we find out where oxy is
NobleHelium: but really i think in the early expansion
focus on your own empire for the most part
Gaspar: literally 60t earlier
we did
that wasn't early expansion
NobleHelium: no you didn't
Gaspar: that was end of land grab
NobleHelium: you focused too much on blocking people off
Gaspar: you keep saying this
NobleHelium: i do keep saying this
Gaspar: as if you don't see how fast everyone expanded
don't get me wrong
this was mostly lewwyn
i disagreed with him at the time as you are disagreeing with me now
NobleHelium: actually the other guy
Gaspar: in fact
NobleHelium: commodore
Gaspar: almost verbatim
NobleHelium: expanded pretty poorly
Gaspar: yeah
and we're in a better position than he is imo
NobleHelium: yes
Gaspar: and his underexpansion
NobleHelium: but i'm not convinced that if you hadn't crashed your economy and needed to bulb alphabet
you wouldn't be in a better position
Gaspar: im not convinced about that either
but i think it all goes back to the IW tech
but no matter how many times you tell me to stop sucking
NobleHelium: i have no regrets about the calendar timing
Gaspar: because in the way your brain works
we can't be this behind without big mistakes
NobleHelium: well i don't have enough information
so yes i am going by instinct there
Gaspar:i honestly don't think
given thoth taking out pindi
and tbs landing henge
i dont think we ever could have beaten him
if he sucked
sure
but hes very good
i think i
or more accurately
we
can beat tbs in a game generically
but not this game
and neither pindicator nor henge was anything we could control
henge is incidental compared to pindicator
but it did mitigate our major advantage in claiming land
to the guy with fast settlers and workers
who just took all those hammers
and put them in units and courthouses
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

I wonder if TBS made out better than Thoth when I got rushed.

Hey. Popping in to say I discovered this thread a couple days ago, and it's been a great read.

Very impressive, that. smile I'm rooting for you!

(August 20th, 2014, 22:43)Gaspar Wrote: BTW, after this, I'm going to branch out to just generally any fictional cities so if anyone has anything they like, feel free to suggest. The naming scheme feels a little Commodorian honestly, with the sheer volume of obscure references so I almost decided to change it entirely but instead I'll just open this up a little bit to be less random.

Now, as to this, your naming scheme reminded me of the Paradise faction from the bundled-with-BtS Final Frontier mod, so I checked out their city list. Apart from the generic 'Paradise,' there are 7 names you don't already have:

Xanadu
Nirvana
Kurnugia
Duat
Empyrean
Tian
Kobol

None of them are all that special. Xanadu is a real city (Shangdu) romanticized in poetry; Nirvana is less a place than a state of being, which is fine for a Hindu-Taoist empire, I guess. Kurnugia/Duat = Tartarus. Empyrean/Tian = Elysian Fields. Kobol is a Battlestar Galactica reference, I think? Anyway, you can pick and choose what you like. Maybe save Duat for a city you take off Ramses? (Come to think of it, hell is an apt descriptor for that barbarian iceball, too.)
