My typical frenzied ferret-on-acid posting will begin when we get combos. So...go tell Gawdzak feedbacks!

Okay, so I lied, I have a little bit to talk about already...like, why am I here?

Well, I'm defacto down to one game right now, and I'm comfortable running two good games at once. The map for 61, plus the Pitboss Slowdown Crisises of '14, have kind of been making me think I'd like to try a “normal” PBEM again. So, here we are...I'm in a field where I can definitely win but shouldn't ever stomp, rocking a decently standard map, playing with a bunch of guys I like. Good deal.

I'm going to start by saying I intend to win this. I never join anything specifically looking to lose but in the big, sprawling fields of a Pitboss life is rife with vagaries and chance. Here, I'm reasonably expecting to neighbor every other player and I have nobody to blame but myself for not making a run of this. I'm not going to sim to the nth degree but you can expect micro, goals, and some careful demo watching.

My flavors of (Novelty-seeking, fun) aren't going to go away...but I will make a real effort to pick the strongest novel leader/civ available, and to hell with the temptations of Toku/Zulu. That means that no, I won't pick Darius or HRE for the fourth(!) time, but whatever civilization I choose needs to make sense for the techs my start requires, and the leader needs to be capable of sustaining a hard land-grab. I do worry a bit about the lurker council's list...I see Seven posting, and he tends to overrate Exp and underrate Fin, particularly for a tighter, costlier map like this. But in the end...interesting gameplay is found blitzing through an unprepared victim and banging out first-to bonuses, not making some silly role-play choice at the outset that leaves a competitive player on the back foot and scrambling for the rest of the game.

Quick speed is going to be a readjustment, I can already tell. The fast speed and low difficulty means that tech will simply fly once the fundamentals of Currency/Code of Laws/Civil Service land. Killing tech rate is a losing proposition, no matter what you gain from a conquest you had better see a good and fast ROI. As a result, I would prize early defensive UUs and/or a UB that helps the snowball over some hot young conquest UU that struggles with obsolescence ten turns after it gets built. Growth is also paramount; citizens need to be at happy cap and working improved tiles every moment that is feasible.

There are a few bright points about the speed. Techs are cheap early, so the low-beaker Hunting or Fishing options won't kill you outright. Barbarians are going to be far less of a menace for long here in our rapidly filling little world. And hey...this should at least end in a decisive manner. Snowball is king here in BtS Quick Speed, but I'm going into this with both eyes open about that.
So, that's where I am here at the outset of PBEM 62. I hope my thread and those my rivals keep you entertained. Ask anything, anytime, and I'll endeavor to answer promptly. Now...let's get on with the show.

I'm basically in retirement. It's opened up a few slots for people to scrap over.

I believe the technical term is "resting on your laurels". Actually, Ceil, you're there too. Laurels are comfy, I hear...maybe I shouldn't ever get them.

We need a good "Retired Old Badasses" PBEM. Krill, Ceil, Rego...who should fill that one out? Sandover?
