Here's Shaka with one worker :

Do you think it's worth taking exp ?

Hey I did a sim like I promised (with shaka) and a 1 worker plan got size 2 settler eot27 warrior eot19 with a 2 turn worker after (in slavery) That seems quite nice.

Actually 2 workers also eot 27 but with 3 forest chops not 2 like the above plan, still 1 warrior and size 2 in slavery

Well we can decide on the second worker once we know how good our second city will be. Shaka sounds fine to me in Genghis' absence...

Glad I could help smile That plan can be done to have a mine up on one of the forested squares the turn before the wheel comes in too, and has a few hammers into a growth warrior also

Very well, Shaka it is then !

Hmmm Civ is a bit like magic, with all the things I have on my to do list it always ends up being on top. I just noticed that no one chose a financial leader !
The distribution is
Exp/Imp/Agg : 3
Org : 2
Cha/Spi/Ind : 1
No Pro, Fin Cre or Phi.

It's more or less how I'd have rated them for this particular game, except there'd be fin somewhere in the middle and Ind on par with Org.

Now from best to last, the leader and civ picks :
1) Caledorn/Plako as Julius Caesar of the HRE, it's a great combo. They'll rush to COL and then build cities everywhere with the rathauses to pay for them. Only problem is of course the bad starting techs. Also a pretty fun UU.
2) Agent/TBS as Genghis of Zulu, aggressive Ikhandas plus Agg's -25% maintenance to pay for the imp trait, it's like a small org. Also aggressive impis, because they're not broken already...
3) Grimace/wetbandit as Mehmet of Korea, it's a solid pick IMO, else we wouldn't playing that in PB22. Not much in the way of synergy but solid.
4) Dreylin/Ipecac/Ruff as Monty of Vikings, Monty isn't bad and aggressive berserkers is a good asset. Not sure how they're going to play it being the only civ with no imp or exp they're taking the risk of losing the expansion phase.
5) Elum/mackoti as Augustus Caesar of Persia, Augustus is super awesome and gets you lots of hammers, being the only ind will make a difference, but Persia is not so great. They get a good chariot and that's it.
6) Whosit/Gavagai as Washington of Mongolia, I've never tried BTS Mongolia (neither in SP or MP) and they haven't impressed me as SP opponents either, it'll be a new experience fighting their super promoted keshiks. Washington gets the not-so-impressive Cha to go with decent Exp. I'm not a fan, especially when Shaka was available for cheap gers and overall a much better trait than 2 happiness and a boost to their gers (they alone gets your cavalry to 2 promos).

I didn't rate us in there, we'd probably be behind Agent and above Dreylin. We have good civ/traits synergy acompanied by a leader that stands its own and a civ that's pretty strong as well, and that's what I like in a good pick.

Nice list. If you re-did it in order of how scary an early neighbour they are I'd think AgentTBS sits on top and I'd be worried about highly-promoted Keshiks from Whosagai...

I think we know what our first five turns are all about domestically, but do you have any thoughts for scouting? I like to get the first ring of expansion scouted before setting off into the unknown, especially with no circumnav bonus and intercontinental trade being unlikely. It may even be best to keep our scout nearby to fogbust for settlers and give extra protection.

One starting trick which is very easy to get burned on is not selecting a tech. You can do this for the first four turns in the hope of getting a hut tech, but all your overflow beakers get dumped into a random tech at the start of T5 (see our PB13 thread for evidence and banghead), so we need to be careful.

Yeah I've been rereading your PB13 thread and the mistake was problematic, luckily the beakers ended in a not-so-useless tech but still. I'm not sure if there'll be any huts (being Torusland script) so not sure how valuable not selecting a tech would be. Of course it's possible that the mapmakers added huts by hand or via some randomization of the process. I suggest WSW for our first scout move, and then maybe circling around the cap to uncover all important resources/strategic emplacements. We also need a city naming theme, if we decide to be lazy we can take the Roman list in reverse order (but that's if we're really lazy).

Dog-latin names for the city's main feature? Example, pig city is Piggicus...

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.

I'm wondering about settling before scouting. With a pro mapmaker I can't imagine there is a reason we wouldn't SIP, but I suppose WSW might reveal an amazing site while settling might reveal a hut to go after...

I'll be pretty happy if there are no huts though - I hate how easy it is to get left behind on tech if your scout meets a bear.

I've got nothing for you on city names, I'm using all my inspiration to keep up with our PB18 civ (humblebrag! tongue)
