I made a mistake today, whipping the work boat in Maserus to have it ready for the border pop thinking that the chop I was doing was due next turn, and the worker then dutifully finished his chop. I have the choice between putting the chop into the WB, finishing it this turn with 78/30 which loses a lot of hammers or putting it in a granary and finishing the WB next turn (at 50/30 currently), losing a turn on the clam. For now I chose the second option but I'm angry at myself there banghead
I generally overwhip my cities so I'm trying to get rid of unneeded whips, this one is not only unneeded but clearly suboptimal.

I may end up settling the stone site before the gold, mainly because Lobambus will produce a settler before Qunum. But it'll be only by a turn or two. I need more workers. There's another wine in the west (2N of the gold on the picture above), but I think it's yet another chokepoint (~4 or 5N of the gold). I'm not sure where to go with the warrior, I'd like to investigate the double clam/gold site but if there's seafood NNW of the gold or something west of it it may change the dotmap. Also this warrior will have to head back east soon to guard the settler heading for the stone. So lots of choices for this fellow.

I had a quick look and added a couple of signs encouraging more exploration (although that may not be possible if you've got guarding to do).

I'm not sure about settling city 4 so early (or indeed at all) - its a horribly slow site which needs a border pop to make more than +1 food a turn. I also thought settling for the clams and gold you just uncovered before site 6 might be good. Although you'll want the gems online asap, so possibly not.


Maserus is looking good. Also are you whipping Lobambus in a couple of turns? Keeping it pumping out settlers at size 2 appeals to me for some reason.

We met Agent's Genghis/Zulu civ. The fact that he double moved us to walk along the border is, I think, a show of good will (intended or not IDK). It would be pretty shady to double move us till they're in a good position then snipe a worker or raze a city. Especially because he can't know that we don't have an axe for defense right out of sight. Of course if he decides to attack, the city is lost, but I don't see what's in it for him.




After considering all options I explored for one more turn in the west before heading back to the stone site, here's what I found :




Next turn it's back to the pasture for pillaging duty then east to make sure the settler arrives safe.

From what I understand about the map, there is a natural border to everyone's territory with 1 tile wide chokepoints, so I've put signs for the alleged borders of our territory on the map (after I took the screenshots). One of them is 1W of where the warrior is on the picture above.

Now about your comments, I think you're right about site 4, when we'll eventually have all the good sites settled it can be a last minute settlement for the copper and whale (mainly for the whale), but for now it can't be a priority. The warrior in Maserus can't move for now, due to the impi, and the amount of barbs who've been in the east these past 15 turns. The impi saved us from new barbs for a while but it won't last. But I'll be sure to send someone there when I'll have an axe around.
I'll be whipping Lobambus and Qunum ASAP for more cities, but you may be right about staying at size 2 for the former, the happiness limit is pretty low at the moment, and won't rise for a long time except for the gold, so using the awesome food tiles only may be worth it. It may mean settling spot 5 before spot 3 to avoid long distance travel.
Last thing, Agent's at 6 cities but with Genghis it's normal, CH is at 5 but he's imp as well, and Whosit at 4. And I have two more settlers coming soon, so overall I think the expansion phase is going alright.

Edit : I think I want maths next, there's a lot of forests around and I hate to lose out on 10h every time I chop.

Maybe. I was also considering going the aesthetics route but maybe it won't be possible before currency for eco reasons. Calendar offers the benefit of actually being economically useful beyond the wonder it gives access to so it's a strong possibility.

I double whipped the settler in Lobambus but I didn't see how to get him to the stone spot safely, I may have had to take a risk while moving him. So I sent the warrior from Lobambus ahead to protect him. After giving it some thought I don't think the best use of that city is to stay at size 2 and pop settlers, because it has 6 hills in its BFC and enough food to use them all (they're all grassland hills) so I think I could turn it into a good hammer city soon. I've already mined the hill between Lobambus and Qunum so I think it's worth it to grow to size 3. Then maybe a settler because of the lack of happiness, and then it could be a military pump. I'll be refraining myself from whipping too much from now on, I've already overwhipped in some cities and the capital needs to grow, the northern city has no food, Lobambus can probably grow a bit more into mines. Only Maserus has a good potential for 5-3 whips or 6-4 if I want to use the marble and oasis all the time.
