I've finished Ethernetting my house. Holes in drywall repaired, etc. I am now building a server rack for the basement out of 2x4s. Once that is complete, I can install the patch panel, switches, etc and put that phase to bed.
On an unrelated matter, my PC is starting to run hot ... even at idle. When I got it (2 yrs ago), it would idle at high 30s, low 40s. A few weeks ago I noticed it was idling high 40s / low 50s. I took it all apart today (new fans at front, reviewed fans at water cooler, reseated heat sink, checked for missing cables, connections, etc and now it is idling in the 60/70s.
It is currently off.
So ... do liquid coolers go bad? I have a corsair H60 installed.

Homemade watercooling kits need to be topped off periodically. IIRC supposedly all-in-one coolers are good for the lifetime of the part, but obviously they're not made of completely impermeable material since they have hoses and couplings. I don't know if you can top them off though.
Did you check for dust? That's an easy source of reduced cooling.
That said, if things jumped 20 more degrees just due to re-seating that makes me thing something is broken-ish. Bad electrical connection on fan made worse by jostling, too little/too much thermal paste, or the re-seat went wrong.
Thanks Sunrise. I also did some googling and found an interesting article from the Arctic Silver people regarding application. I had been cleaning the old junk off ... but, apparently, I was using the wrong type of alcohol - guess I will have to drink the rest of the Shiraz.
After picking up some of the right stuff and following the above directions ... I tried again. Temps in the 80c almost straight away. My Corsair H60 is dead. I will have to write to the corsair people about their 5 yr warranty and see what that means (purchased May, 2012).
I've ordered a Noctua NH-U12 S ... swapping from liquid to air cooling (I don't overclock) to remove one possible future issue.

Re my H60 cooler ... I opened a ticket with Corsair yesterday at 2:24pm describing the situation and asking my options. I got a reply requesting a copy of the original PC order so that Corsair could validate the warranty and then an approved RMA less than 30 minutes after uploading said PC order (at 9:29pm on Christmas eve).
I will be mailing the part back to them on Friday.
That is impressive customer service.

I've been looking at various PC options for my house (NAS, HTPC, upgrade my desktop, etc) and I understand how to compare and contrast fans, coolers, SSDs, HDDs, cases, etc.
I am unsure how to compare / contrast motherboards and graphics cards. I don't really care about graphics cards as I don't think I push them very much ... but mobos are a different matter.
So ... how do you compare mobos? Number of RAM slots, supported max ram, SATA ports, i/o options, color, ... other? Anyone got any suggestions of links to review articles talking about what they are looking at?

Motherboards are usually about ports and expansion slots. And obviously you need to pick one that is compatible with your processor. Some motherboards come with better onboard sound or wifi that you may want.
I spent some time on google and reading various sites. The main thrust of these sites was 'look for mobos that have what you need' ... which is pretty obvious when you think about it. One site also went into detail about considering the layout, where the sata ports are (ie sitting under a graphics card slot), how things are orientated (eg USB 3 port), etc.
Currently, I am looking at a mobo for a NAS server so all of that SLI support for 17 GPUs is worthless.

Noctua NH-U12 S arrived today. It fits nicely in the required space ... although the fan is almost hard up against the first ram heat spreader (why did I get ram with heat spreaders? Talk about influenced by style ). Temps are currently showing 32C ... much nicer and sound is about 29dBs which is only 2 above when everything is off.

I have a GPU question. Currently, my GPU (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti) is sitting in slot #2 (a PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 slot according to my reading of the mobo info) with a TV tuner in slot #1 (PCIe x1). The CPU cooler is close to the TV tuner (a couple of mm) and it is stacked against the GPU. A few forums have mentioned that the TV tuner card (Ceton InfiniTV 6 PCIe) can get hot when it is recording / playing multiple channels concurrently.
So ... my question ... can I move the TV tuner or the GPU to another expansion slot? To me, it appears I can move it but its performance will drop from x16 to x8. Will I even notice?
If not - any suggestions on cooling the TV tuner?
I've included a pic from my mobo manual re the expansion slots.

You can just stick it in another PCIe slot. Any size > then pin count work.
