[PB25-SPOILERS] The Lunacy of the Reign of HAK Continues

So far the picks have been:
1. German Joey: ____ of the Zulu ------ giving Agri/Hunting
2. Elkad: ____ of the Dutch ------- giving Fishing/Agri
3. Donovan Zoi + AdrienIer: ____ of India ------- giving Myst/Wheel
4. Gavagai: _____ of Carthage ------- giving Fishing/Mining

So far this gives me one opponent that I'd need to race to a religion. Still got 4 more people to pick Civs after me, though. So could easily end up with more people with Mysticism. Though hopefully if I pick Arabia or HRE and as such getting Mysticism, that might nudge the rest to not go for Myst, knowing 2 opponents already might be racing for early religion.
But there are a good number of Myst civs out there that people might pick, so I'd certainly be taking a change if I wanted to grab a Mysticism civ. I'll have lunch and think on it a bit more, and make my pick in an hour or two. Doubt that would be enough time for either of you to chime in, but to me this part doesn't really make too much difference to me. I don't have any way (or time) to sandbox the start to help me pick, so it'll mostly be just a coin flip. Maybe I'll put my top choices into a random number generator and just see what the RNG gives me. smile

Eh, no real time to try to figure out this whole sim stuff. Guess I'll just choose something without really thinking too much about it. Biggest thing right now is that I realize I'm likely going to have to start out working just the 3-food unimproved Pigs to start. Which means no extra gold to help with research. Unless I work the grass river for a mere 2F1C, which would also suck.
It if suck it up and grab a civ that has Fishing, then I can work the lake for 2F2C.....but blah, really didn't want to start with Fishing..... frown

So kinda just threw a few names in a hat, and came up with HRE.

I'll start with a worker to pasture those Pigs. Then build a Settler, hopefully with my scout having found a decent 2nd city site.
Will have to decide if I start out going straight for Poly (figure I'd hope any other Mysticism starters go for the cheaper religion) or if I research something else (like Mining), wait for the first religion to drop, and then go for the other one.

Just realized I blew it with picking HRE. Just started thinking about leaders, and I was considering Victoria. If I had gone with a Fishing civ, that Financial trait would have made that lake a 2F3C tile which would have been a good starting tile. Oh well.

I'm still considering her, but also doubt she'll be available when it comes back to me.
So top picks right now are:
Sulieman (Imp/Phi) - can't remember the last time I chose a Philosophical leader, so might want to for this game
Julius Ceasar (Imp/Org) - Just like that it'd help with really quick expansion
Victoria (Imp/Fin) - Even though I won't be able to work that lake right away, it's still a good set of traits
Jao II (Imp/Exp) - the expanding double-whammy...quick workers and quick settlers
Catherine (Imp/Cre) - just one of the backups
Justinian (Imp/Spi) - this would be good if I actually get that early religion. Though I've done Spiritual pretty often
Ghengis Khan (Imp/Agg) - basically if somehow all the above are already taken
Cyrus (Imp/Cha) - same as with GK. Not sure which I would prefer between the two
Augustus Ceasar (Imp/Ind) - put him last since I need to try a game where I do not keep trying to build Wonders...and if I have him, I definitely won't be able to stop myself.

As you can see, I locked myself into wanting the Imp trait. So these are my choices to get it.

I would not usually want to work a 2F3C time over a 3F0C time when building my first worker. Getting that first worker and therefore the first growth a few turns faster does delay the payoff if you are only looking at commerce, but it should make it up relatively quickly. An immediate race to a religion would be an exception, I suppose, but I am not personally a big fan of those and, even in that case, you are still researching at least one worker tech first.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

So does anyone think doing Sulieman of the HRE is a bad idea for any specific reasons? If not, that's what I'l likely pick, just to try it out.
Otherwise, I suppose I'll pick either Julius or Victoria. Would like any thoughts anyone might have on these options.

IMP/ORG is just a faster starting Mehmed with fewer mid game buildings.

Pick Sulie if you have a plan to get out the settlers #2 and #3 quickly otherwise Mehmed is the safer option.

Mehmed is EXP/ORG, so I'm confused by what you are saying. Or are you meaning that a "faster start" by not using the IMP trait for the settlers, but instead the EXP/ORG for the Worker and cheaper upkeep?

EDIT: Oh, and I see now what you mean by the buildings comment. Sulie would get me faster University & Customs House, while Mehmed gets faster Aqueduct, Harber, Market, Grocer, Lighthouse, Factory, & Rathous.
That's a lot of additional buildings that get double production speed, one of them being my UB.

Wait, is Sulai PHI?

Just realized you were talking about Julius there regarding the IMP/ORG, giving Mehmed a better option than him.
Sulie would be my IMP/PHI if I wanted to try a leader with Philo, which I haven't done in forever. Though I also haven't done ORG in awhile either.
And I do know that the EXP would get me a faster immediate start, since I do need to make a Worker first for those Pigs. I'd get the worker out faster, pasturing those pigs, to help get out the first settler quicker by default.
Hmmm, gotta think about this. I really was leaning towards IMP, but for me (who tends to not make enough Workers)....having the faster workers might be just as good, if not better.

Decisions, decisions...
