Khan Rides Forth <SPOILERS>

Thank you for the explanation. Ok, I've done a lot of play testing today and I think you were right and I was wrong in that maintenance will be a factor. Therefore, organised gets better as do Sumeria and Zulu.

There are quite a few leaders that I think I would be happy with at this point. Roughly in order: Huayna, Darius, Victoria, Catherine (over Sury? We can discuss!), Suryavaraman, Mansa?

However, I think that I may have come to a conclusion. I think we should pick Zulu. Here's my logic. Due to technology constraints, our early game cities will struggle to have much to build. Barracks are a tech-free option that will help reduce maintenance and therefore produce a tangible benefit. Sumeria get the cheaper, earlier courthouse which is really good but their starting techs are slightly worse and they require us to tech a couple of extra technologies. I do accept that one is really cheap and we may well want the other for the religion anyway though. If we did pick Zulu, that may even make Ragnar a really decent pick?

I feel like I might have persuaded myself into a poor decision through weak logic. With normal speed, the tech rate will be slow and I think a barracks is a decent hammer dump if it is helping what will be a significant problem. Maybe this is an irrelevant bonus due to rounding though and I am being silly. Is cheap barracks (giving 20% reduced maintenance) and an extra promotion worth losing Imperialistic? The Impi is a real nice unit too and with promotions, it's even better.

My current inclination is to pick Zulu with our first pick and then we can see how the land lies in terms of leaders but we're pretty much guaranteed to get a good one. If we pick a leader now, we'll likely just pick a civ for starting techs and have negligible further benefits.

Ragnar would be an excellent pairing with Zulu. I definitely approve of picking Zulu first thumbsup

Even if we don't get Ragnar Zulu is still a strong pick

And so it was. Glad we are in agreement.

Very quick observation as I'm short on time right now, I think the first pick of Mehmed shows that we do not have identical starts and that we are rather fortunate to have the possibility of a 10 turn worker. I just cannot understand that expansive is better than financial if you are not getting the initial extra worker turns.

Or he is so good, that he just can see things on a level that I can't. One or the other. Capac pick was an obvious.

Predictions: Darius and Victoria will be the remaining leaders. Egypt and Sumeria likely choices for the civilizations but I have my excuse of "well, I could not know which starting techs were relevant for them" all ready for when I am completely wrong.

Quick edit to say I did not read that Darius was picked when posting! Apparently I am a slower typist than I realised.

The picks:

ipecac – Victoria of China
Alhazard – Darius of Sumeria
Khan – Ragnar of Zulu
LogicalTautology – Huayna Capac of Native America
DTG – Mehmed of Rome

I think we can claim credit for those last two civ choices.

I think Ragnar of Zulu is an ok combo. The best there is probably Darius of Sumeria but ours is a bit more fun and I think it gives us a few more options earlier in the game. Also worth mentioning is that we can still build courthouses later and the bonus with ikhanda is additive.

In terms of how we start, a lot of the movements depend on what the scout finds but I imagine our start going something like worker, warrior (grow to size 2 at same time as it finishes), worker, settler.

Hey, I got your PM but it wouldn't let me send one back. Glad we're ready to go; if you get the chance you should totally try to get a sandbox or plan out around the first 30 turns -- just enough to get out the first settler.

No idea why that is. I will work on a micro plan hopefully tonight.

Ok, I've got a plan which ends up with settler build on turn 27 (probably a good time to revolt to slavery?). In addition, we have 2 workers and 1 warrior. Mining and Bronze Working finished and The Wheel nearly completed. Capital will be size 2 but 3 turns until size 3 working the deer (5 food, 1 hammer) and the corn (6 food) and maybe the wines farmed? (2f, 2 hammer, 3commerce). Is that good? I am not comfortable with quick speed and, obviously, this is weak if this is quick speed but I am struggling to find ways to be more efficient. We can whip another worker or settler from size 4 to size 2. We have huge amounts of food so the whip will be fantastic.

A lot depends on what the scout finds in terms of exact worker movement.

It looks like someone had the wrong starting techs so we're starting again. No save just yet. That's not a problem though. I would much rather that we iron anything out at this stage than discover something game changing later.

I was thinking of maybe going with the city names from Mount and Blade for our cities but I am not sold on the idea (Praven, Dhirim, Suno etc. Yes, Swadia are my preferred faction!) I would be happy with any naming scheme as long as I can think of a new city name without resulting to wikipedia. Got any ideas?

Naming schemes have to be the hardest decision for any new game. Probably tougher than the civ and leader wink

In all seriousness Mount & Blade is fine. Just pick something you can get a good list from. Every time I find a naming scheme I ragout think is awesome I get eliminated early, so don't make it too good lol
