[SPOILERS] DTG's Omnipotence Embodiment

(March 29th, 2015, 14:59)DTG Wrote: First pick. Only player not to take a Financial leader. smoke

Alhazard did very well from the snake; Khan's Ragnar/Zulu combo is... confident. I wonder if he is a smurf or has played MP elsewhere (I don't mind either way, but Aggressive Impi are quite a statement).

Anyway, a question: is it a stupid idea to build a Settler at size 2?

I've been thinking about doing something like:
  • WB (grow to and complete @ size 2) ---> Worker (whip) ---> Warrior ---> Settler (whip at 70H) ---> Granary (OF + chop)

This would mean postponing Hunting to beeline Bronze Working and then Pottery. The Worker would Mine the PH, which only offers 1 less yield than the Deer while building a Settler. And I think that, to start out, 1C > 1H for my leader and this start.

I'm not sure if this is too risky, though.

edit:

I don't really like ignoring the deer for so long, which is our best tile. Have you tried worker first->improve deer->chop workboat/settler?
Reply

Work Boat ---> Worker is the fastest opening because commerce is the bottle neck to this start, and the Fish is the best commerce tile in the BFC. Ah, if only I'd picked Darius. lol

If I start with a Worker while researching Hunting first, the Camp completes 4 turns before Bronze Working is in. The Camp offers 2 fewer commerce per turn than working the Fish ASAP, and not being able to chop a Work Boat means the losses compound. Earlier Worker turns are not desperately needed because Rome starts with Mining and Fishing (i.e. no Roads or Farms) and building a Worker first makes poor use of the Expansive trait compared with whipping.

I could reconsider whether it is better to go to Hunting before Pottery, but I think this will delay City #2.

For future reference: this will be dubbed the "high point" of my game.

In terms of the game, I think I've settled on: Bronze Working ---> Hunting ---> TW ---> Pottery.

Some later details are still TBD, but this means working the Forest Plains Hill > Deer for 3 turns at the start... crazyeye I also need 1H of OF from the first Warrior build to let me bring the Worker to 23H in 2-turns.

The first Settler is out 1-turn later than in the previous set, but the capital is in a much better state with an improved Deer. I can send both Workers to the second city, or I can keep one at the capital to build a FP Cottage or chop.

Can't sleep... must... name... capital...

RNG lands me with:

Organic Wall Generation!

The ability to create, summon, generate walls by using the organic materials. Sub-power of Organic Constructs, variation of Wall Generation.

Capabilities

User can create organic walls from nothing or by shaping the existing organic materials, they can shape the wall to shape they want, but afterwards the walls are unchanging and immobile. Depending on what organic material the wall is made of, it can posses a variety of abilities and be very effective in both offensive and defensive combat.
OWG it is. thumbsup

Power rating: 4/10 (candy wall? All attacking Impi lose Mobility promotion.) (edit CANDLE wall in the pic. Hmmm, I really do need to sleep).
Acronym rating: 8.5/10

Any lurkers are welcome to roll the name for city #2.

Oh yeah, I played some civ earlier and moved a Scout. It was the highlight of my day.

I'll post some general thoughts about the map and opponents once we are 10 turns into things.

Early scouting suggests that one of Torusworld or Commodore hates Farms and Pastures:

Who needs Agriculture. cool

The Fish/Clams/Fur spot would be a great site, but it's impossibly slow to set up without a 3rd city to prebuild a Work Boat. Perhaps it could work as a 4th city to fuel research... hopefully there are some better spots near OWG.

It's nice to see that we'll have one inter-continental trade route. I'm sure that I could get TGL if I really wanted it, but I think I'd need 3 islands to justify it. Assuming a T60 TGL and 10(?) cities around T110... TGL could offer 2 trade routes * 1-1.5C * 6 average cities * 50 turns = 600–900C. Which isn't that much. On top of that, it's fair to assume that I will lose at least one player's foreign trade routes because of the wonder, and rush like a maniac to claim 3 islands.

I don't think the starts are mirrored:

One civ has 4 Prod. Is there a logical way to explain that? I'm the only player with Fishing (hammers for a WB), and Mehmed is the only Expansive leader.

Is Khan growing on an Ikhanda? Or LogicalTautology growing on Stonehenge?

Turn 7 rolls around, and LogicalTautology and Khan gain +6 score. I suppose that they've each researched one of Fishing or Hunting.

The land so far is kind of... meh:

Just 1 Sheep for land food. rant

Anyway, while trying to scout around the large ocean to the northeast of my capital, my Scout happened across Khan:

On T8, I was planning to move to the unforested hill to announce my arrival and hopefully gain visibility on his cap. After that, I will declare war on T9 to pass through the Zulu territory.

After that I don't know.

I guess I could camp a resource? This would be a troll move on my part, will no doubt make me an enemy for life, will hinder all my future scouting... and it's not like I've found a good second city site.

OTOH, if Khan has an inland capital —as I suspect he does— I'd assume that his +6 score increase came from researching Hunting. This would explain why, despite being 3rd in the snake pick, he opted to take a 1st pick civilization rather than a 3rd pick leader. Hunting would allow his Worker to improve a Deer, and the initial investment in a tech forced by the start is somewhat offset by the strength of Impis.

Since, on T2, one civilization had 4 production, while the worst crop yield was 3:

I suppose that a Plains Hill start, while working a Deer, would provide +3FPT and +4HPT if Khan was building an Ikhanda. A size 2 capital on T8 would confirm this.

And if he is building an early Ikhanda, he is planning to be very aggressive very soon.

If he did open with an Ikhanda, he will have 0 hammers invested in a unit and lack Slavery. I could sit on the Deer for... 3 turns, with impunity? Perhaps just 2, if he switches to a Warrior as soon as he sees my Scout. A size 2 cap @ 2/24F on T8/9/10 could only generate 14H over 2 turns, unless Khan wants to starve to really spite me. lol

If the Deer is to the north of his capital, it wouldn't be worth the effort on my part.

Hmmmm. Let's see what T8 brings.

Is Khan Zulu? The Zulus starts with Hunting so he probably actually teched Mining or Fishing.

I highly doubt anyone would actually go for a Ikhanda start, if he is, then he would not be a threat anyways.

You might want to circle your scout back though, finding a good second city spot should be top priority.

Oh duh, they're a Hunting civ. Thanks.

I'm probably misreading the demographics. I'll put a little time into interpreting it properly tomorrow.

Circle Scout... NE, going clockwise around the Lake/Ocean? That had been my plan prior to discovering Khan. I could double back to avoid the DOW, but the isthmus is very narrow so it won't reveal much new land for 4-5 turns.

Ok, my confusion re. the demographics was easily solved. The pre-modifier mfg. values are listed, not post-. So a 4F 4H capital would be working... a Plains Forest Deer? Or someone's capital is on a Sugar/Banana? A 3F capital tile would sure be nice. tongue

Well, anyway, there are no size 2 capitals yet, so the others probably opened with a Worker.

The T8 demographics:

+2000 soldiers for LogicalTautology (Huayna/Native America) accords with his researching Hunting. Khan (Ragnar/Zulu) went after Fishing. ipecac (Victoria/China) and Alhazard (Darius/Sumeria) haven't had a score increase yet, so must be targeting something bigger.

I moved north to meet Khan:

So I should try to gain visibility on his capital while I can. Should I be nice, and move 2N (onto the Grassland)? Or should I be a jerk, and move onto the Deer for a turn? After that I'll circle the Scout back.

Being a jerk will probably delay his Worker by a turn, if he only has one 4-yield tile in his BFC like me.

I'll probably be a jerk, unless Gawdzak tells me otherwise.

In other exciting news, the WB is out now:

After I entered his BFC:

Mfg. went down by 1, but everything else remains static. So he probably has a dry Corn/Rice/Wheat. Or a dancing ?

EP shows:

For later reference, the formula to uncover production is: SabotageProduction*((EspionageByAIOntoYou+100)/(3*InvestigateCity)

573*((4+100)/(3*368) = 54H

So he opened with a Worker, which has been in production for 9 turns. It will be delayed by at least 1 turn, unless he has another 4 yield food/hammer tile in his BFC.

I could camp to delay it further. I won't camp because (1) that's lame, (2) I can no longer scout, and (3) Khan will have good reason to turn this into a grudge match.

Maybe he already does but... eh. Too late now. neenerneener
