I don't know how far you're going but if you make it to Italy I really liked Florence and Venice. Rome wasn't as fun. Venice has lots of charm, but also lots of tourists depending on when you go. I went over the Christmas holiday and it wasn't packed with people and was very nice. Florence the same. Rome was a madhouse everywhere but I guess that's kind of what Rome is/does. There are lots of cool places to go besides the historic areas that get thronged with visitors. Find a good neighborhood restaurant that is off the beaten path and reward yourself with a carafe of good, relatively cheap house wine. You won't be sorry and the walk after your meal will glide you toward your next adventure. Don't try to micro plan your trip too hard. Leave room for barbs and other unexpected pleasantries each day.
I went in 2012, during the end of PB5...always interesting when I use RB games to measure time. Flew to Amsterdam, and from that point spent one day traveling and one whole day in a city. Went Amsterdam to Berlin to Prague to Bratislava (for just the travel day) to Budapest for Sziget festival weekend, then Vienna to Franfurt and finally back to Amsterdam for flight home. Out for something like 15 days. Never planned anything except the hostels and travel days.
I went solo and stayed in hostels. what I enjoyed the most was meeting new people that I wouldn't ever see again after those two days. Berlin was good but I think the best was Prague. Vienna was actually somewhat blander than I hoped but I doubt you could ever go wrong with Amsterdam unless you have my knack for shit luck.
Can we just declare victory in PB18? I feel as if I am standing between two swords of Damocles.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.
