I agree Tasunke, and to me, I think of it as just the cost of doing warfare. If you make an enemy, they're an enemy, and so why wouldn't they want to hurt you for taking something from them? I was disappointed it turned out with Elkad like it did, but that's more disappointment with Donovan napping him rather than joining in and Commodore's insanely fast conquest of Grimace, rather than disappointment with how the situation developed after that. It's not like I didn't understand his motivation for the blood feud or begrudge him; I declared the war on *him*, and it was thus my problem to deal with. If you want someone's land, you need to TAKE it from them, and only then is it yours to decide what to do with it.
(that said, I was extremely annoyed when the *sub* for Bacchus in PB18, Gawdzak, kept doing the same spite-whipping and self-razing. that felt over the line...)

Looking at hte map, I've come to a decision how I'm going to play it out.
I'm going to drag Commodore back into the pack and make him lose if he doesn't fuck off the island, and Elkad isn't a real threat by himself. Just build the Triremes, and beeline optics after Engineering. Or maybe before Engineering I suppose...

Hmmm, Optics is a very interesting idea, but how do you actually dislodge his land troops from the island?

Units, units, and more units and caravels to stop him adding units to defend with. Force him to go to Astro and obsolete Colossus and harm his economy. Make him play in a manner that lowers his chance to win. UW can hold on that hill easily enough, especially with walls and a castle.

Also, Commodore gifted Nijmegan back to Elkad, which I'm think is reasonable given the city gifting rules but traps a bunch of units in Leiden.

Ah, those units were always going to be trapped, but I think that city gift really goes against the intention of the city trading rules. There were no rules allowing gifts. I refused to gift cities to Elkad or HAK when the Incans invaded because I thought it was against the spirit of the rules, and this seems like that same kind of deal. Also, I believe the point of this city gift is to allow Elkad to move his trireme fleet over to the island through the ocean to stop you from reinforcing it with the galleys.

Arguably there is a case for that because a gift is only a trade inasmuch that there is diplo pseudo-currency involved, if the rules were that city trading is acceptable "for a real offer" because then a gift wouldn't really meet that condition.
But this is why I just prefer the blanket no trading because then is no confusion over the issue.

Thankfully, though, the city gift doesn't change teh fact that I still control all the ocean tiles; it doesn't help Elkad in that matter.

Yeah I can sympathize with that, but then you get into edge cases where war could be avoided with a small city trade... its a lost cause I guess.
At any rate, city trades were supposed to be cleared with the lurkers before they happened.
