Naturally built, right; no explicit mirroring?

No starting settler bonus is fine, especially since it looks as though you've already built it that way.

Well, IMO if a map has been built for the city to be settled on the starting spot as the "one right choice", then it would be perfectly valid (and preferable?) for the city to be pre-founded. This doesn't seem to be a general perception though, presumably as it removes the illusion of choice from the start. If, therefore, the desire is to preserve the illusion of choice, then the full illusion should be maintained. In this case, not giving the Starting Settler bonus increases the likelihood of SIP, but if that is the aim, see above.

Comments specific to my start in-thread.

I like the starting settler bonus but I can live without it as well.

I prefer the settler bonus, but it's not a deal-breaker for me either way.

Difficulty is Emperor, Barbs are Raging. The map is fully built, but with no true mirroring, but with a tend towards equivalency - IMO everyone's starting location and, more generally, chances of success are within a stone's throw of each other. Not perfectly balanced - IMO that's the place of mirrored scripts.

It's not an illusion of choice, IMO, but that's up to you.

Conclusions seem to be pro-SS balance, so I'll give it that.

Sorry if that comment came off harsher than intended; it wasn't aimed at you or this map specifically, but my perception of the mapmaking process of normalising start positions is that it does naturally tend to move SIP towards the "one right choice". IMO this is particularly true in BTS/RtR where the opportunity cost of the lost turn is generally higher than in FFH2/EitB, even discounting SS bonus.

I know, and I agree. But I think consideration of your specific start should make it clear that this is not something that is being forced in this case, and that moving is a potentially viable option, even as it is clearly planned around one starting location.

That's as much as I'll say on the topic.

I have the save but I, er, forgot to download the mod ahead of time. duh

So that's happening, but not before I need to go to bed - i.e. now. I might be able to play first-thing in the morning, otherwise I can only apologise for this inauspicious start. I have slapped my own wrists and will ensure it won't happen again. nono
