So my wife bought me Civ5 for Xmas a year or so ago. I never got around to installing it, but finally am deciding to do so. I never even had a Steam account before now, and it appears you need one just to install this game.
But I have a problem. When the install asked for the activation code that is on the pamphlet in the cd case for the game, Steam tells me that it is already used by another Steam account. So did someone somehow steal my activation code before I could use it? And if so, anyone know what I can do now? I suppose I'll be needing to contact Steam directly, but just figured I would ask here as well (especially since today is Sunday and I certainly won't reach anyone at Steam today) to see if anyone else has had this issue or know of anyone that has.

You won't reach anyone at steam for the next month. Their support is terrible. But yes that is what happened. I'm not even sure what they would do with the fact it was a hard copy.

Well that just a whole lot of bullshit. Guess I'll try to send messages to both Steam and Firaxis. Someone has to do something with the fact that I have a paid for hard copy game that someone else hacked/stole the code for.

Was it bought used or new?

So I'm an idiot.
My wife just reminded me that about a year ago I had tried to install the game on my old desktop, but it wouldn't function because the specs were not good enough for the game. That was part of the reason (well, there were many other reasons too) why I had bought the new laptop I have. So since it had been so long since I attempted to install it, I totally forgot that the Steam ID I had created was linked to a gmail account I often use for software registrations and other things that might generate junk mail that I don't want to see in my main account. She reminded me to check that account (which I almost never do)....and low-n-behold there were the emails from Steam asking for me to allow access from a new device and that someone else (ie. the other Steam account I just created) tried to use my product key.
Ooops. Guess when/if either Steam or 2K respond to my support requests, I can let hem know to disregard because my brain sucks.
Anyway, I'll be installing both Civ V and the Gods&Kings expansion pack shortly. So if there is anyone out there that would like to play a simple easy-going PBEM on either of them, let me know. I wont know anything at all about the game yet, unless I get in a full SP game before then....so just know I'd like it to be a game for learning purposes.
Maybe even one of those Succession games people always talk about where multiple people play the same Civ for a certain number of turns each. If I've ever done that, it was years ago and I barely remember it.

Glad to see it was a problem with yer noggin rather than hacking.
I might join you in a casual PBEM or succession game, played less than a dozen games of Civ5 myself.

I'd take part in a Civ5 PBEM or succession game as well, but yeah I'd like to keep it to those who don't know much about the game.

Ok, guess I should start a thread? For those of you that do know even slightly more about the game than me, would either/any of you want to take care of getting the game itself set up? I've only just so far just gotten through the very beginning stages of playing a game on the basic default settings.
Also, am I missing something or once you install the Gods & Kings expansion can you not run a game of Civ V regular version? My icon on the desktop that starts Civ V now gives a startup screen of starting Gods & Kings and I have not yet found a way to start a game without using the expansion. I'm sure I'm just missing something simple.

I believe that once you've logged in, in the "Options" menu or somesuch, there's an option for disabling the additional DLC. I'll be lurking along on this; played only a few games myself, but wouldn't really have the time to take part.
