1) can anyone tell me why the game has started deleting the MP login information (username and direct access address) each time I start up Civ? It used to remember them between logins, but now I have to retype each time; not a big deal, but getting repetitive.
2) Is there a way to turn off or disable the clouds in globe view?
Thanks!

For 1) I think I can give you a reason but not a solution : it must be reverting to default. My game does it from time to time, it consists of changing back to French and not remembering the MP stuff ; you just don't see the language reverting to default because you already have it in English by default.

It had happened once or twice occasionally in the past, but now it's every time. It makes me sad.
Maybe I'll try playing around with profiles or somesuch.

Make a short cut and have it point to a new specific INI file. You can have multiple INI files one per shortcut for different pb games with different mods.
Current games (All): RtR: PB80 Civ 6: PBEM23
Ended games (Selection): BTS games: PB1, PB3, PBEM2, PBEM4, PBEM5B, PBEM50. RB mod games: PB5, PB15, PB27, PB37, PB42, PB46, PB71. FFH games: PBEMVII, PBEMXII. Civ 6: PBEM22 Games ded lurked: PB18

Are you playing with the Steam version? If so, for me, changing My Games / beyond the sword / CivilizationIV.ini to read-only actually stopped this from happening, dumb as it sounds.

Not Steam, no.
I have a separate shortcut for each mod that I'm using or have used recently, but I'm not sure about separate INI files. Currently I'm only pitbossing with one version though, while the rest of my games are PBEMs that I launch through the save. Guess I'll have a poke at that when I have a chance.

I'd try setting the .ini file read only as William suggests.

This was my shortcut to PB18:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\Civ4BeyondSword.exe" mod="mods\RB Mod 2.0.6.4" ini=C:\civ4ini\CivilizationIVpb18.ini
Note the (write-protected) ini specifies the IP address, in-game alias and allowed camera flying, which might be the answer to your second question - enable camera flying and press alt+F to zoom out without clouds getting in the way.
Completed: RB Demogame - Gillette, PBEM46, Pitboss 13, Pitboss 18, Pitboss 30, Pitboss 31, Pitboss 38, Pitboss 42, Pitboss 46, Pitboss 52 (Pindicator's game), Pitboss 57
In progress: Rimworld

Well I've played around with it and that has definitely fixed the IP address issue - although not until I located the .ini file in a new folder directly off the C: directory.
I've set the Flying camera to "1", and alt+F gives me the "Satellite Camera enabled" message, but then zooming out still gives me clouds.

Camera flying is CTRL+ALT+F.
