Quote:I'm pondering building the Moai ASAP in Eglarest, using it to border pop instead of a monument.
Well, predictably enough, monument first wins. Earlier access to the fish more than regains the 30h cost of the monument. I'll probably continue with the Moai afterwards anyway. Btw, Creative/Henge would result in access to the fish 10t earlier in this city, which is a massive snowball effect.

Scipio refuses to open borders and the floats an undefended worker besides my warrior.
Maybe he's just got a great read on me though, because I didn't call him on it.

Would totally sign up for that thing.
Looks like the 1 ring with 3 wraps theory was correct:
And that looks like Dreylin/Grimace as my southern neighbour. I'm about to whip my first settler for this island next turn. Pigs/horse/Fish in the first ring is probably too good to pass up though the plains hill is also tempting. Here's a picture of the land on the northern side:
It looks like the southern island should be your own one. We still need to explore the east but it looks hard to contest. What may be contested though is the smaller island to the north east. My next settler is going to that location, so I should be able to hold it. I'm wondering whether I should try snipe the mirror island in my south from Dreylin. On the one hand he's built the GLH, so his expansion should be pretty slow. On the other hand, he's built the GLH, so he has Sailing and he's settling lots of coastal cities.
Btw, FennBandit also picked up Sailing this turn and are filling up their trade routes with my cities.

In other news, Haram landed the Oracle around T60. I think it's pretty likely that he took Metal Casing with it, I doubt he had the beakers to get to Writing in time for Maths. That's probably good news all in all because it makes it pretty unlikely he can win a Pyramids race. He probably doesn't have Masonry yet and he shouldn't beat us to Maths. So to chop it out he doesn't get the Maths bonus. The other option is to build it in his super-PRO capital, where he has Oracle and Henge. That makes 21hpt at size 6, which is around a 12t build. He could speed it up a bit but I don't think he'll want to go wonder->wonder in his capital after building two of them already. He's got a GP almost completed in his capital, he could dirty that up with some engineer points, but that's a pretty slim chance.
A lot of other people are Fin and I can't really see them valuing the Mids. Dreylin/Grimace will surely be looking to catch up in expansion. The only other two options are Borsche and Scipio and I'll be able to see if they connect up their stone.
So the Mids look safe! What do I plan to do with them? My original thoughts were to grow Eglarest, Menegroth and Gondolin to the Rep happy cap. Get two Libs in Menegroth and Gondolin and run a pair of scientists in both to add 30bpt to my tech rate. In the long term, cottage Gondolin and farm pretty much everywhere else in anticipation of specialists. That would mean the first two GP are scientists though, with a chance of an engineer. I don't think the scientist bulb path is immediately very useful. Though Philosophy will be good soon enough. So we're talking about golden age, settling or academy. If I don't come up with a golden age plan I think settling in an academy city would be fine. That's 1h, 15.75bpt, so almost 500b in the first 30t. The question that's bugging me though, is where to put an academy(and oxford later). If I'm going for mostly specialists then breakeven will be low and Gondolin might not be a great choice. But it has a decent food surplus to run some specs anyway and in the late game as other sources of commerce come available it will be the best location. Perhaps it's more efficient to go with an Academy in the capital, run farms and specs and make it an Oxford/NE spot. That certainly seems better in the early game, Gondolin might catch up in the mid-game but then when we get Biology the Cap is probably just as effective. We could use the capital's hammer potential to pick up choice wonders to add to the gpp pool(looking at you Great Library). That leaves the question of where to put my hammer cities though, particularly the Heroic Epic. Ironworks might be too far away to worry about but ideally I'd have a candidate. Of the other cities I've currently settled only Dor-Lomin really has the potential as a hammer location I think, but it's a pretty slow starter.

Turns out it's Jowy, not Dreylin, to my south.
He's got 4 cities but his high score(and CHA trait) indicates they've got pretty high population. I don't know if he's a better neighbour than Dreylin. I'm more scared of Dreylin's combo but I'm not sure how much the GLH has set them back. Jowy's capable of better play IMO but he's also got a bit of a warlike reputation. I guess I'd prefer Dreylin since Jowy's more unpredictable. I offered him OB straight away, since it will be a while before he defogs a route to me anyway. Might as well look nice and will eventually be worth some gpt from island cities.
I also settled my 6th city:
The sheep gets chopped into a granary while the corn is farmed. 3rd worker puts down one of the FP cottages and then the 3 of them go chop forests for the Pyramids. The only thing that really bothers me here is how slow I am in getting the second FP cottage up.
Meanwhile in Dor-Lomin, I put a turn into The Great Wall.
I need to finish the axe next turn so the extra overflow speeds up the second worker. I wasn't sure what to put this turn of hammers into though. I don't think I really want to build a spear next, not necessary because chariots will take a while to appear. A border pop is useful here eventually, but it's not really time-sensitive, so I figured I could upgrade the monument to TGW. Maybe the gpp would be more useful somewhere else but the culture wouldn't be.

Hmm ...
It seems like this 'smaller N-E island' is actually just the end of someone else's southern island. So there's 9 big islands, one person has great access to them from their capital and 3 people have weak access to them. Pretty cool. I think I'm going to go ahead with the 2 settling plans I already have; my own island and the one to the north east. I'll need to be especially careful about defending that north eastern land and I should probably write off settling any of the other islands for now. Whoever can settle Scipio's island probably won the neighbour game here. Maybe if I settle my own fast enough before the others realise I could be in with a shot?
I'm trying to figure out how to dotmap my southern island with the information I have but I'm not sure. The east of the island(where I have full information) rather sucks, but the west(where there might be competition) looks good. I want to settle the fish first since I have the WB already out, I'm tempted by the plains hill again so I can settle pigs/deer/horse next. Dropping my worker on that forest seemed the best play for now.
I also have to finalise my Mids plan; decide whether I want to whip a settler into the Mids or keep the pop for a Library afterwards.

I might settle something like this. 3 hill cities is pretty tempting. I vetoed the horse/fish/pig site since it makes it very awkward to settle for the gems; would need a shitty city likely with just FP for food that is easily boated. There was some temptation to go 1E of the pigs, but I think the plains hill wins. I'll probably cottage the sugar and work that at size 2 instead.
On the topic of Scipio's island, I don't think I can really compete for it. Even if I got a foothold, it would be on the weaker Eastern end.

You know, when GJ proposed the game via PM this was one of his selling points:
