I dumbed it down just for you Commodore.

He reinforced the city with another axe. Man, this sucks, I had him. If only I hadn't forgotten that we had OB, my other axe wouldn't have been teleported away from the city and I would have razed it last turn. Anyway no point in fighting now that the surprise factor is gone, so I offered white peace. We're gonna have to share the island. It's going to be problematic. Defending an island is easier if you own all of it, so the enemy has to galley the whole stack in if they want to invade. But if the island is shared, both sides can slowly ferry over their units in preparation.
Anyway I might as well spill the beans now. Fact is that in a mirrored map scenario, I need an edge. There are players in this game who are better at micro than me. I could put in more effort to get closer, but ultimately I'd still be one step behind. I wanted to out macro them. I figured out the map early. I figured out that most people would first settle the good spots in their main land, then settle the south island (because capitals are on south coast) and then finally the north island. My plan was to rush to the north island and beat my northern neighbor to it. Then claim the south shortly after. Meet my neighbors with axes if they try to land. I should still have been able to secure all my mainland afterwards because of the jungle choke points. If someone were to settle on "my side" it'd be hard for them to defend that settlement. Anyway my plan failed. I had TBS as my northern neighbor, probably the worst case scenario. Not only did he beat me to it, but also happened to be ferrying over an axe when I made a surprise attack. And of course he got lucky that I failed with the execution, I have no-one to blame but myself for that. You'd think I'd know better considering the PB2 incident. What's the plan now? No edge for me. So I'll just focus on maintaining my empire and defending when the time comes that someone wants to expand through me. Short term plans include settling the other northern island in a bit, and capturing the barb city in the southern island. ![]() We killed three barbs and captured the barb city. We're now on par in city count with everyone we've met except GJ who's going crazy with cities. Our cities are growing nicely though partly because I've had to build units. TBS is settling another city on the island and has at least 5 axes running around there already, so I need to build up my forces to match his. We're #1 and #2 in Soldiers I think. We'll get Currency next turn, should be the first one there. That should be an extra 24 GPT at our current city count if we have enough trade routes to fill every slot. I suppose things aren't so bad despite the setback with TBS. But I still feel like it'll be a problem that he got to the island, in fact it already is because I have to build more units than I otherwise would. I'm hoping to settle the rest of my mainland cities ASAP.
TBS timed 9 axes to attack me when peace ended. I have 6 axes and 1 spear. Argh. Of course I have to get the ONE GUY as my neighbor who wants me to fight him.
Hang on - is he pretending to be you?

On a slightly different note, how do you find it trying to expand onto four different landmasses? Is the reward clearly worth it or would you in retrospect like to concentrate on 2 or 3?

Me with TBS' civ skills and time commitment is a scary thought ![]() Seriously though, I doubt he's fighting out of spite, but rather he agrees with my thinking that the sole ownership of the island is important. I'm guessing he'll give it a try now and give up if I have enough defense. Then he'll try again later in the game with a proper stack. You have the liberty to check everyone's thread now and see if I could have beaten anyone to the islands if my northern neighbor happened to be someone else. I'm guessing I would have beaten most players to it. If I didn't, then it was my micro that was the problem. Admittedly I haven't planned my micro ahead or used the sandbox. When I signed up I expected to be out of PB28 soon due to a 2v1 war against me, but I ended up fighting back and doing fine, so the game still has my attention.
Checked in-game, he declared. Looks like the city is going down. He has 11 axes, I have 6 and 1 spear. I have 25% tile defense from the hill.
There could be a silver lining though. ![]() I could drop the sixth axe next to his city instead. To defend, he'd need to whip another axe (he just whipped the city) or have a second galley in the fog with an axe already inside. Then again, maybe I should just defend my own city. He'll have 25% odds attacking against my axes on the first try. With good rolls maybe I could survive? EDIT: If he gets a crossing the river penalty then it's even better for me. The combat preview doesn't show it when I tried, but just a few turns ago in PB28 I had a similar situation where it didn't show the penalty, but when I made the move it still applied. |
