Politics Discussion Thread (Heated Arguing Warning)

Hm? Regardless of the politics of the situation, ignoring a referendum result in a Commonwealth country is just not a done thing (though someone with more political knowledge can correct me if I'm wrong).

I do have to say that, as someone with an academic background and some professional experience in the field of international relations, I find the decision to leave the European Union to be a bafflingly poor one. Like, I understand the various post-Brexit rationales put forth, but the separation makes little economic, political or strategic sense, particularly given the entirely predictable consequences in Scotland and NI which now threaten the integrity of the UK itself.

OTOH, it is nice to see the United States finally being comparably more rational for once smile Ofc we might not be so cocky after November...

Despite all the effects a Brexit will have I happily see those cherry pickers -which have done a lot to slow down any further integration of the EU over the last decades- go.

That aside the result (and the following regrets ) shows how stupid people are.

"I just voted for leave to teach the goverment a lesson not to really leave"
"I thoughtt the stay wins anyway so I didn't bother to vote"

There really should be a test before anyone is allowed to vote if they understand what they are voting about and what the consequences are.

I say we elect educated and specialized citizens to represent us and lead the country for us, so we can focus on living our lives. We'll hold a re-election every few years to keep em honest. I might go patent this idea, I think it has real potential.

Norway already said No way back in '92.

I'm sure this is all over the twittersphere, not sure where I first heard it:

"Let's make Great Britain small again."
I have to run.

Doesn't work ( well maybe in switzerland). Everytime I hear someone say "I vote for xy to teach the gov a lesson" I get the urge to strangle him.

I do like czechout as a catchy name.

I voted to stay in, but a lot of people fell for the arguments of leave, the main weird one being to ignore experts as they dont know anything (with almost everybody saying leave would hurt the economy)

I dont think this second referendum will happen, nor do I get why people think there will be a new general election on the back of this, why would the conservatives hand over 3 years of power of their own free will?

Time to build a wall! Make the EU Great Again!

Do you mean a second Scottish referendum? Genuinely curious to hear why not, as this is my biggest anxiety.

Cameron said he won't trigger article 50, so it'll be for Boris (please god no) or whoever succeeds him (mostly pretty worrying too) in a couple of months to do it. One desperate straw is that before the election Farrige was saying he'd demand a second poll if he lost by less than 10%. Unfortunately I don't see how it would be possible, but we can hope frown.

From my pro-euro Bristolian bubble it looks like a lot of people have been convinced the reason they don't get paid as well as they think they should be is because of migrants, membership fees and red tape. Personally I think they should blame austerity, mechanisation, stupid expensive wars, globalisation, tax evasion and our lack of controls on monopoly businesses, but as an old leftie hippy I would say that hippy.
