Rio Olympics 2016

I searched for an Olympic thread and couldn't find one ... have I just created another?

Here is a link to a site that contains predicted medal hauls. They are predicting Australian men to win the gold in hockey ... I know they will be competitive .. but they won't win gold ... they always seem to find a way to blow it.

On a personal note, this last Olympics I saw in Australia was Barcelona. It is difficult watching the Olympics in another country as you only see coverage of that countries team. At least this time around, with the aid of the NBC Sports App, I can watch what ever the flipp'n heck I want to watch.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Looking forward to women's gymnastics, swimming (both genders), whatever Usain Bolt is in, and women's fencing, in that order. I dislike the "narratives" that NBC forces on every major Olympics sporting event, but women's gymnastics will be genuinely fascinating this year, as the US team is both more diverse and older than the norm.

Also, gonna move this to the "Off Topic" subforum.

I know you started this thread with the intention of discussing the actual sporting event, but I'd recommend a read of this article on some of the topics related to the Rio Olympics, as mentioned by Ichabod before: https://www.thenation.com/article/budget...-olympics/

Watched the opening ceremonies expecting samba, instead got art. I suppose all of the lurid colors and giant afro wigs were symbolic of something, possibly trash. Best part of NBC's coverage: the constant cutaways from the bizarre interpretive dance / rave near the end to focus on some supermodel clapping. To be fair, her odd extended catwalk down a darkened field was the highlight of the show.

Well, ye can all go home Ireland just won the Olympics. First athlete to be banned is all that matters really.

Olympic Update: Google has caught up with the rest of the world and is sorting the medal tally by G / S / B. Previously, it was sorted by total medal count.

That said, this may be because USA has 1 Gold and China has a Silver + Bronze. We'll have to wait and see if Google reverts to sorting by total medal count if (when?) China takes the lead in Gold.

Watch the cycling over the weekend, that course seems a bit dangerous, cant remember previous games having so many injuries. Gymnastics seems to be getting quite a few as well.

GB currently ahead of where we were 4 years ago (cant see that staying the same for long)

The cycling events were far more intense than I expected. The men's event had a wild finish, and somehow the women's topped it. I'm just relieved to see Van Vleuten is okay. I was watching live, and I immediately feared her neck was broken.

Felt pretty terrible for Mara Abbott. 4 hour race and you get passed with 150 meters to go and walk away without a medal. That's brutal.
