If nothing else, 6 years have happened Pb1 finished in June 2010, Civ5 released in September, just as this community was entering a sort of Silver Age of Civ4.
Pre-Release CIV VI Discussion

RB never really got into MP Civ5, mainly because expanding into massive empires and annexing your neighbours one-by-one isn't really a thing in Civ5. Also a lack of any pitboss functionality, and PBEM had to be hacked together (using simultaneous turns as a framework, which results in frustrating imbalances for whoever goes last).
There is a pretty lively MP community on Steam. Civ5 works quite nicely on live MP, the lack of cities (and therefore things to do) gels nicely with turn timers. The problem is the lack of any double-moving rules (Civ4 had the 8-second rule from the start), and the fact that games take a good 4+ hours of your day.
I went spelunking and came up with some threads from Civ 5's release:

Hmmm, I don't think I saw commemorative coins on that list....
Personally, I'm not *expecting* this it will be The Best Game Ever Ever, but I'm wanting to give it a fair shake. At the very least it will be fun to see a new game and figure out how to maximize and/or break it, even if the time to do so is more towards Civ5 than Civ4.

Civ5 was really bad on release. They fixed it and improved upon it with expansions. The new game is a continuation of that, so it should be way better on release. I'll wait for the demo though.
I was skeptical at the beginning, but the pre-release media and community reception here are positive enough that I'm willing to gamble that Civ VI will, if not at last be a worthy successor to Civ IV, then at least stand as a fun experience on its own merits right out of the metaphorical box.
