It's auto-built in any city after a trade route to that city completes, and increases the gold output of trade routes passing through that city. Rome just gets them without needing a trade route there first.

What effect would they have before a trade route is there then? Seems to be a null gift.

As far as we know, the trading post may do nothing at first. But it's still a boon in that you can immediately receive the benefit of the trading post when you build your first trade route, rather than having to wait for it to complete.

Edit: The recent livestream confirms that trading posts "extend" your trade routes, allowing them to traverse an extra 15 tiles, should they pass through. So you'll be able to have distant foreign trade right away as Rome, rather than needing to establish the trading posts in your own empire first. Also, since roads are "auto-built" between cities that are within trade range of your capital this helps to keep the road network expanding without using trade units.

List of Victory Conditions:

Science: you must accomplish 3 major milestones:
  • Launch a satellite.
  • Land a human on the Moon.
  • Establish a Martian Colony.

Cultural: you must attract more Visiting Tourists to your civilization than any other civilization has Domestic Tourists at home.

Religious: Your Religion must become predominant (followed by >50% cities) in every major and minor civilization.

Score: If no civilization has achieved another victory at 500 turns, the civilization with the overall highest score wins.

Domination is unconfirmed and either:
  • To achieve a Domination victory, you must conquer the Capital of every other civilization.
  • To achieve a Domination victory, you must be in control of more than 50% of the cities on the map.

Buying a computer with a 32 bit OS keeps looking like a bad decision...

Is it really 64-bit only? Ok, well, that's the excuse I need to free up my autumn for other things.

Doesn't surprise me hugely. The extra memory addressing space will probably be useful for the (hopefully) extremely complex AI. The big kicker though is that without a sizable market to make it for, the 32-bit version won't be worth the extra effort in engine code and testing. Currently the steam hardware survey (not an ideal sample set, but not too bad) gives ~8% 32-bit machines, and dropping pretty fast.
It's always possible that it will work on a 32-bit machine, they just won't offer support for it. Perhaps someone with both can answer that one soon after release.

Sorry to hear it's affecting you guys though. I'd recommend upgrading to 64-bit as and when possible. I suspect it will rapidly become the norm rather than the exception, at least for non-indie games.

12 gigabytes disk space, really?

Civ5 takes 8.5 Gb on my system. So not terribly surprised

Going to preorder. Expect to regret it. Worried it may be continue Civ5's trend of too many systems not interacting properly. Also worried so many social policies and the option to (mostly) freely change them will end up too fiddly. But oh well... I'm not known for my patience
