Pre-Release CIV VI Discussion

I'd imagine they do have multiplayer already finished a while ago, they just haven't released much information because it's not what the majority of their players are interested in.

They did mentioned somewhere having shorter game modes geared toward MP so it will be interesting to see what's available.

If they haven't multiplayer sorted this late into the release schedule, don't expect it. It's only a week to release, game has gone gold for well over a month at this stage.

I don't expect much, they just did specifically promise to give us some multiplayer info "before release" during the stream yesterday. So I thought I'd mention it.

Given how important multiplayer functionality is in games these days, if a company is waiting until the week before release to talk about it you've got to assume they've pretty much ignorex it. And given that this aspect of 6s release mirrors 5s, it makes me wonder what other aspects (eg beta testing) are going to be as cack handed. I wouldn't be surprised if the game comes out, at the very least, massively imbalanced.

If it's numbers that need balancing that's actually fine. So long as the fundamental systems can be tweaked that is generally ok for civ one first release.

Of course if the underlying systems are naff then that's a different problem.
Current games (All): RtR: PB80 Civ 6: PBEM23

Ended games (Selection): BTS games: PB1, PB3, PBEM2, PBEM4, PBEM5B, PBEM50. RB mod games: PB5, PB15, PB27, PB37, PB42, PB46, PB71. FFH games: PBEMVII, PBEMXII. Civ 6:  PBEM22 Games ded lurked: PB18

Most things look fine (as in good enough that they could be balanced into fairness), but the Eureka system concerns me a little bit. Pretty much every tech in the game can be reduced by 50% with a mini-quest. That seems... kinda massive? The ideal way to play would seem to be gearing your entire game around a bunch of mini-quests. I'm not sure how I feel about that, and it seems like it could introduce some fundamentally broken balance problems if they're married to the 50% thing.

Whatever the game turns out to be like, you have to admit that they just nailed the PR on this one.

I wonder if they saw the popularity of Sulla's survivor sseries before sgetting this up?

In the era of always-on Steam mandatory updates, there really isn't much concept of "going gold" any more.

/r/civ has been going all AI Battle Royales for quite a long time now.

Game still has to be playable out the gate. I wouldn't be surprised if that's one of the main reasons why Civ 5 still only has an average of three hours per game owner.

I typed up an article with some pre-release thoughts on Civ6, mostly comparing what I've read about the mechanics to how the same systems were implemented in Civ5. Long story short, I'm cautiously hoping that Civ6 will fix a lot of the things that I disliked about Civ5. I also think the game's going to be pretty good for Single Player variants, pretty awful for Multiplayer, at least out of the gate. We shall see.

Still working on the site graphics and organization for the Civ6 section, which should be ready sometime next week. For now, just this article is ready.

Thanks for writing a summary for those of us who haven't had time to keep up with most of the changes. I really like the civics tree, but I'm not convinced by the AI objectives. Shouldn't the AI do what it thinks will help it win the game, not some randomly decided quest that it gets assigned?
Surprise! Turns out I'm a girl!
