hello, i am a longtime lurker here for years, however i decided to register at forum so i might throw gauntlet in for next PBEM game. And i did lurk this PBEM game from start and i decided to share my thoughts about Yuris move against Teh here.
I can understand frustration of some lurkers a bit, they are hoping for a long interesting game where outcome is unknown for long time. But it is players who decide how game is played.
Well, from perspective of Yuris Frankfurt is most logical target since it still would be a wedge between his core and Arpinum/Stockholm if he went for those two cities.
Also Teh did go all in with his attack at Sulla and bluffed against Yuris, thinking that Yuris would be targeting other cities. But by leaving Frankfurt empty and no walls, Yuris instead called Teh's bluff.
So bad luck for Teh here and Sulla surely is happy with move that Yuris made.
Also i noticed in Yuris thread that he didn't scout center region after turn 50???
This resulted in a sort of negative snowball roll that forced Yuris to make move at Teh:
Firstly when Yuris finally started to scout center region, both Archduke and Teh already planted a city in center region and Sulla just planted his second city in center region. And region around Frankfurt should be controlled by Yuris normally, instead Teh managed to plant his second center region city there. By scouting properly Yuris should have noticed hilly copper region and claim it, you really don't want an German civ plant Hansas there. I like to add note with this development: Teh was forced to expand in direction of Yuris, due Sulla's aggressive city plant next a oasis. In long term with planting the oasis city Sulla wasn't only able to claim big part of center region, it also pitted Yuris against Teh. Did you plan that ahead, Sulla?
Secondly Yuris didn't get in contact with third city state for long time, which prevented him getting a eureka for Political Philosophy, a very important early civic. And when he finally met third city state, he already captured Lisabon and this did prevent triggering eureka (I didn't know that you needed to meet three city states alive at same time to trigger eureka, i make note of it in future games). As result capturing Lisabon which was good move at short term, in long term it delayed him getting Political Philosophy (attacking Teh now is other case of short term profit and long term loss at first look).
Thirdly by not scouting, Yuris couldn't decide which target to attack with eagle warriors. In this game with Barbarians off, this mean no eureka for bronze working (delaying iron working in long term) and archery, his eagle warriors were rightly to be feared by everyone until around turn 50. With barbarians on, players are more likely to get archery around turn 30-40. When Yuris finally started to scout, it was turn 50 when Sulla and Teh indeed started to upgrade their slingers into archers. And instead trying to ambush a city with three eagle warriors at turn 50, Yuris had to scatter them to scout since he lacks map information.
And now at turn 80 Yuris is forced to attack Teh from his perspective. Frankfurt sort of became a red lap for Yuris to charge in due its placing.
