I'm waiting for the clock to come down on The Long Journey Home because
- Looks kinda like No Man's Sky
- Thematically a love child of Tharsis and FTL
- All built around the gameplay of Lunar Lander...

I've got that one pegged to keep an eye on; something about previews suggesting kin to Star Control II. Let us know how it shakes out.

Played Overwatch on the free weekend and decided to buy it.

Even though I'm bad at FPS its still good quick fun, short games mean you can play a couple then leave without much time commitment.

I'm always surprised how people on this forum play all kind of games except RTS or similar sub-categories

You say as I was just getting back into Starcraft, watching the latest ASL and getting ready for BW:Remastered lol

Ok maybe it's just the posts in this thread that are about everything but strategy smile
I'm liking Normandy 44 Steel Division so far, but I don't know how many people I know are going to play it

I somehow lost in RTS around the age of 18, quite completely. Last thing I spent any serious time playing was Starcraft 2 just for old times sake, but mostly kept thinking "why am I doing this". I have since bought Wargame, and a bunch of other stuff off sales, but never could get into anything.

RTS hasn't really existed for a while, with Starcraft being the exception that proves the rule. I watched a video by a LOL streamer (talking about the differences between it and HotS) and he brought up an interesting point: RTS is about managing micro and macro, and that's too hard for the average player. As such, it split into two genres with wide acceptance: macro-focus moved to the 4X genre (especially now that it's more accessible to the mass market) while micro-focus created the MOBA genre. I know I've had trouble getting into SC2--even just the campaign has had trouble grabbing me, much less the MP (which I think I tried the tutorials for back during my first attempt where I got through the demo content, but nothing more). Part of the problem is that when/if I make another run at the game I'm going to have to relearn it for certain.

The Eugen games (RUSE, the Wargame series) have been flying the flag for RTS too. I would argue that RTS is about managing micro and macro *quickly*, which means that 4X is not an exact replacement for that side of it. Still, fine by me as I'm better at games the longer I can spend thinking about them.

As to what I've been playing recently:
Twilight Struggle (MP online tournament)
XCOM Long War (inspired by the SG here)
Axes and Acres (uses simple rules with difficult goals to achieve a great strategy experience; adapts its difficulty to your skill level)
