[Spoiler] PBEM 77 Map Thread

I think you got the "hand crafted naturalism" part of it done well and proper. I'm to tired to think of balance issues atm unfortunately.

I love the look of it.

Russia is missing starting-tile coal, other than that the strategic and luxury resources seem balanced.

It's hard to fully evaluate without strategics. Looks mostly balanced. One concern I have is if one civ moves the starting scout either 2S or S/SW and decides to give up the starting PH 2h for the extra fish by moving 1S. I haven't simmed this so I don't have a decisive answer as to whether that would be right or not. Obviously it's slower to start but that gives an option for a super food capital that can churn out foodhammer units for days, getting +13f at size 4. Everyone has the option to do this but only if they pick the right direction to scout. Probably this is not a winning move.

For Arabia, maybe slide a river between their silvers to make up for the weak commerce (compared to +2c gold, +1 gems). In fact, maybe make one of the gold tiles desert on those? Nope. It's good the way you have it. Gold cities - 1 food (crabs); Gems cities - 1 and 2 food. Maybe slide Arabia's fish 1W so they don't have to choose between settling on the gems or getting the fish (that would annoy me to death); Silver city - 4 food resources (best of the lot IMO).

There's enough similarity not to worry too terribly about who's getting the short end of the stick. My adjustments are really nitpicky. Only concern is that everyone is so far apart. This is going to be a simfest for a long time. I like that kind of game but this may be a micro winner takes all kind of game. I'll be interested to see how you do the strategics. Good looking map.

Edit: weird, I didn't see strategics in worldbuilder initially. Ignore the bit about strategics in my post. I have to get to bed so I won't give it another pass so just skip that from my critique.

Thanks for the feedback.  I fixed the coal and I agree that I need to look more at the metal happiness situation.  I'll have to do that after work tomorrow as today has flown away from me.

Any chance of posting screenshots? I tend to have a lot more time when I can look at a thread than time I can open the map on my Civ computer.

I'm thinking of how to post screenshots without needing to take 50 of them...  Could someone try running it through one of the mapmaking tools?  Those both have some visualization tools included.

I moved the fish near the start and tinkered with the area around the metal happiness.

Hey, sorry it took so long for me to reply. After the thread was moved to the subforum, I forgot about this game until I saw your PM yesterday. frown I took a look at it, and it seemed like a great map to me. I did not see any major balance issues that other haven't mentioned.

I'm sorry you had some trouble with my tool... could you PM the error message to me? I ran the map you posted through easy_click.pl and it seemed to work just fine for me. (did you remember to rename the .save to "map.CivBeyondSwordWBSave" ?)

De Gaulle is possibly better than Nappy, because lighthouses are less important that being able to use outer ring seafood that you can't plant for and Henge makes a lot of sense. Lighthouses can wait, essentially, and saving 30 hammers on popping borders, options at Oracle>MC and Colossus or GLH (this is base BtS? That should be banned right? EDIT: Ah yes, it's banned. Good)

Yeah, I'd say go De Gaulle and plan for Henge rush.

If I do this again, making a mental note to make it so the entire BFC is revealed in the initial screenshot. I probably should tell all of them that there's a wet rice for each of them in the hidden portion of the BFC. Or better, I should have just moved a hill before taking the screenshot so they could all see it themselves.
