Woden's and Chevalier Mal Fet's [Insert Clever Name Here] Team Thread

Hm, so settler or warrior? Both accelerate the growth curve.

I think settler first (just 3 turns of production, though), then the trader, then a warrior for Kabul is ideal.

Interesting find with the Russian scout in the east.

I suspect one of two options:

1. Four continents that all meet in the middle in some really appealing center.
2. The PBEM23 map turned on its side.

Chevalier, I would have your western scout tack southwest next to explore that possibility.

Archduke and Emperor K next door is not ideal news, but better than Sullla and Singaboy.

Congrats on landing GoTH! I can't wait to see you guys really make use of it  thumbsup

Oledavy,
Could you elaborate on what PBEM23 looked like? I went to take a look and most of the screenshot links are broken and the ones that still exist don't show much of the map.

My thinking is either:
1. All meet in the middle in one location and should meet others soon;
2. A double wave function with 2 north and 2 south continents meeting in both corners; or
3. A single wave function where each player is connected to two neighbors.

Once I take out the barb camp on the eastern shore, I will send my Warrior down their way to take a look and see if we can figure it out.

Yah, I am not liking meeting Russia (Emperor K) and TheArchduke as neighbors. Might need to attack them before Germany gets his production going and definitely before Russia hits Cossacks, not going through that again! I am working up a strategy that could let us hit them relatively soon (~T50-T60) if we want and will post it with my next report.

I don't quite understand the difference between option 2 and 3, but if I read you right, option 3 would only be possible with a toroidial world wrap.

At any rate, I think it's down to option 1 or 2. And the more I think about it, the more I think option 2 is the most likely, in which case you neighbor one other team, and the isthmus is southwest of Chevalier.

If this is indeed the case, here's hoping your other neighbor is Japper007/MikeForAll!

In option 2, continents are stacked so we should have someone directly south, someone East/West, and someone on the diagonal and connecting landmasses would be reached by everybody (much like option 1 but a crossing on both sides of the continent). In option 3, continents are offset and there is ocean south of us and we would have connecting neighbors to the SE and SW and Russia/Germany would have neighbors NW (Us) and NE (hopefully Rome/China).

In any case, warrior will check it out after taking care of the camp.

Notes: Archduke's military power is cratering. Sullla/BRick and Singaboy have both finished their first 3 civics, while most of us are still struggling to finish #2. Rome's strong culture plus a Chinese cultural CS, yowza. I'm also still trying to figure out where Mike's high empire score is coming from. He has one holy site, but GPP reveal no other districts built. Baffling.

Another baffling thing is that, as I try to collect more detailed C&D data on Emperor and Archduke, I'm stymied because I apparently haven't met either one yet, despite my shared vision with Woden!:

Strange. Anyway, it looks like the continent does indeed stretch further off to the west. My scout, after his lengthy detour past Valetta and finding the coast, can start to defog in earnest now.

Closer to home, the big news of the turn of course is the foundation of Salamis:

[Image: aeXTc4u.png]

I'll crank out sailing after mining, so I can get galleys headed in each direction on the coast. It looks like Woden managed to finish off the barb scout near Salamis, so my lands at least are free of any hostile units. I let the warrior sit in place to heal up to full, then I'll put him back on exploration duty - perhaps east of Kabul?

An overview of England, Turn 21:

[Image: LrnnBEu.png]

It looks like I'm the first to a second city, so that's exciting. Salamis works the copper tile and starts to get hammers in on a slinger, although I plan to switch to shipbuilding relatively soon. Next turn I will buy a builder, and two turns after that I should be able to plant the quarry. I'll also want to mine the copper and plantation the tea - we can grab the amenities bonus and improve my science. The big limitation of Salamis, of course, is the lack of food. This will be a tough city to feed without the rice near Kabul. There's a decent patch of flatland there that I want to farm eventually, to make a feudalism triangle. That should solve problems, but until then this city will grow slowly. Production is solid, though, with quarries and hills everywhere, so I got that going for me.

In Trafalgar, we finish the builder, but I need two more turns to finish foreign trade. I go ahead and get a head start on the next settler, but like I said I want to grow to size 4 first. I have at least 5 good tiles to work which I'm not making use of.

Next goals: continue to cross fingers and hope to nab a good pantheon. Get my trade route up and running, and build more defense units/exploration units.

Exploration goals, in order of priority: 1)Find the layout of the southwest. Does the continent continue, or will it taper off? I bet it continues down to another team - I think we're on a sinusoidal continent, like Woden said. Cornflakes' map editor likes to make those, if I recall the thread.

2)Find more city states! Emperor will run into Kandy before too long, let's try and find some commercial/scientific/cultural options.

3)Map the coasts, so I know how to plan my naval game (and establish whether or not a naval game is indeed viable).

Woden, I look forward to your plan of aggression and will conform to your movements. I'm in favor of an early attack, since I think it'll catch people off-guard. Emperor and Archduke are strong players, of course...I hope Japper and Mike are on my side!

Nubia-T21 & Strategy Update

Uneventful turn. The barb scout did not prevent me from moving off of England's city site and still attack, so...

Amon did grab the Jade so I moved the builder towards the Jade and will mine next turn. If I work it, it will slow growth a little but speed up culture. Slinger#1 at Amon moves towards Kabul to defog my south and wait to protect the settler. Slinger #2 moves towards the east coast camp to meet up with the warrior. The Russian scout is continuing moving southwest along the north shore of the double lakes. Need to watch out for him. If I run by him after I take the camp, I might just knock him out. What do you think? Don't want him snooping around!

Now that I know we can get to someone by land, I have worked up a strategy. I do want to go aggressive, so CMF if you don't, speak up now or forever hold your peace. And I don't wnat you to just conform to my wishes, I really would like to hear any ideas you have or call my BS and tell me I am an idiot if you think this is a mistake. I just think I have made a reputation as a builder and think it will surprise them a little if I come knocking soon. And I am playing a civilization that has advantages for early aggression.

Me going aggressive doesn't mean I think you should. IMO, you should focus on building your economy to help fund my military adventures, get out exploring the seas, and continue to expand. I think maybe you should bring a few melee units or horseman, so you can capture some of their cities to get free units.

This strategy is working under the assumption that Russia's/Germany's land are located down in that direction. Not sure if it will change if we find out it is a meeting point for all lands. Will have to reconsider if that is the case. Anyways...

I am building a Settler at Amon now and it will finish in 8 or 9 turns. After the settler I think I will go Builder->Archer(chop w +100%)->Encampment->Archer(Chop w +100%)->Settler->Archers and/or Horsemen until I have a nice invasion force.

This order will depend on getting 3 kills and finishing Bronze Working in a timely fashion. If I can't build the Encampment when I want, I will chop the first Archer into a Settler and then switch back to another Archer.

Research: I am thinking of Archery->Bronze Working->Horseback Riding->Sailing->Masonry. I want Sailing (and a coastal city) before I reach Political Philosophy, so I can build a galley for the first 2 envoys into Valletta. Masonry will give me my UB for +40% towards districts at the capital and the ability for walls. I am going to go straight for PP and then hit Mysticism after from the 3rd envoy to Valletta and the ability to buy City Center and Encampment buildings.

Second city: Builder->Archer(chop w +100%)->Encampment->Horseman(x2)->Archers + Settler

Settling plan: Where, oh where should my second city go. I see 2 options. First option is the planned Horus site...

Benefits of going here are
  • Can be founded on T34 or T35;
  • Best starting tile is the Dye for extra culture plus has copper for bonus gold (remember I get +2 gold for bonus/luxury mines);
  • Will be slow growing and want to found it sooner, rather than later;
  • Can pump out units quickly as city will become a production powerhouse.
Drawbacks of this location:
  • Not a forward city and delays forward city;
  • Russia might settle city by the lakes and prevent canal city;
  • Stone 3rd ring for Masonry eureka;
  • Galley would have to wait until 3rd city.
Second option is lakeside...

Benefits of going here are
  • Forward settled location;
  • Can create road from capital with first trade route for faster movement to Russian/Germany lands;
  • Stone second ring;
  • Might goat Russia form settling next to it to grab all useful tiles (then we can take it);
  • Can build a galley for envoys.
Drawbacks of this location:
  • Pretty far from home with rough terrain between them;
  • Will be slow growing at first;
  • Can't be settled until T39 or T40 (8 turns to complete settler plus 10 turns of travel);
  • Russia/Germany could prioritize this area now that they know we are here.
I have been going back and forth on where I want to settle but my current thoughts are to settle Horus first and have the second settler go down there. Might have to delay a trade route until then but I think getting the production powerhouse going first is better plus it gives me more culture to speed to Political Philosophy and grab 2nd ring tiles, plus it won't be too long before I get another settler out anyways. Probably can have it settled by T50-ish. In addition, I can always send a few archers and my warrior down there to keep a look out. What are your thoughts?

I think the best plan right now is to get to 2 cities, get a few encampments down, go after Kabul once I get 4 or 5 archers, research Horseback Riding, build a few horseman, then march on Russia/Germany. I figure 6 archers and 3 or 4 horseman as an initial force with archers streaming in afterwards.

I don't like the fact that it is TheArchduke and Emperor K that we meet first but I do have a production/military edge right now and should exploit it if we can. Who knows, maybe we will succeed, probably not but might get a few level 3 or 4 promoted archers out of it. Well, that is what I have at the moment, please let me know what you think. I think we may be able to declare around turn 60, give or take a few turns. Should have Kabul taken care of and my army moved down there by then.
