Also if there had been copper at the capital and not at AF? If impi come along then it's an easy out, but because of the high tech costs an impi would only be 3 turns slower if I had SiP, and I would not likely had BW and wheel in that time frame anyway.
And I settled backwards, so I knew that by the time the first settler was out resource location wasn't a death sentence.

Don't get me wrong, neighbor luck is a huge deal. But there's two kinds of it. The first kind is map-luck. For example, JR really drew the short end of the stick to be between dtay and I. However, everyone else had, IMHO, one legitimate land-based attack vector, whether they capitalized on it or not, and everyone for-sure had somewhere they could expand via sea. The other kind is luck due to other players doing things that affect you positively or negatively, but that's part and parcel of a playing a big FFA game. If we weren't all down with this, we'd all be playing chess or maybe even Civ4 duels. For example, Krill's starting settler move set up a chain of reactions that benefited me huge.
What's driving me crazy (and missing from this is context; I've argued with Krill about this at least 4-5 times over Discord in the last year, including emphatically trying to argue him out of moving his settler right before the game started) is that Krill won't even own up to any of this shit. It's always "stupid noobs making terrible decisions" plus now I learn that he thinks that I just lucked into a win. Fuck that!

Even if luck is with you, you still have to make the right decisions. Maybe if you won every battle that was 20% or higher that would be picking into the win. Still have to execute the wars effectively.

People always do right moves and thats only circumstances make them fail.
