Don't think I want to pay $80 for a game that isn't much better than a browser game and is missing key MP support features.

Seems like Civ has fallen, civ 5 was junk, civ 6 isn't even a whole game really, what with the DLC adding content and multiple balance points. Unless they fgo the route of a full MP expansion I don't see how it's rectifiable, and the bean counters at 2K would never countenance that. Which is a shame, because civ 6 could be the best MP civ game ever. I don't think they will even enable mod production as that can't be easily monitised.

So now we have a map editor that works with base civ 6, even if it has been released with R&F, I'm changing my opinion to a tentative yes. If we get pitboss, or a version of persistent MP hosted by Steam which is more likely, then I'm changing that to a definite yes. Mod ability ie the SDK, would turn that to an emphatic yes.

Well fuck me.

I really wasn't expecting a map editor. I may have to fork out some cash and see what all the Civ6 fuss is all about after all.

Double check with Cornflakes and others first, I've been playing around with it this morning and I'm thinking it may still have a few bugs, but it's there.

Ok, notes for self, Cartography completed in 3 turns eot109. Need tech plan. Education? Never going to get that Eureka and need to build two universities. Probably best to go and reread previous posts.

World Builder has always been sort-of present. It is hidden and has to be enabled by changing a 0 to a 1 in a file [not .ini, but similar]. The latest vanilla patch does not appear to have changed this, still hidden unless enabled. The big issue has been that maps made in World Builder cannot be played directly without a workaround. They either have to be to be packaged into a mod, or by using the workaround. I don't have the expansion to play around with. If they have opened up the world builder in the expansion then maybe the maps will be playable now directly???

I didn't understand those posts in the past, but after just re-reading them I think I have a better knowledge of what is required. I think it would be fair to say that there is a working system for games of up to 8 players, but there is a Europe map that I think has 10 players? So maybe that has increased the possible size of games.

Correct. Beyond some quirks/bugs (most notable being multi-tile Natural Wonders can't be placed or removed/relocated) the world builder seems to be stable and the workaround successful up to 8 players. I also made that drag-and-drop python tool to eliminate the manual editing of the SQLite data table so the workaround is mostly painless

I had one cases where a map file in progress got corrupted but fortunately I have a habit of saving frequently and making multiple backup copies along the way and didn't lose much work.

I've noticed some restrictions on placing certain resources and features ... for example woods cannot be placed next to freshwater lakes, iron can't be located adjacent to a river, oasis can only be placed where surrounded by desert on all 6 sides.

Even with those...foibles, I figure that there will be a good number of PBEMs worth playing. If I can get a dozen games total out of civ 6 and 2 expansions, it's probably worth it. That's probably 4 years worth of entertainment for me.

SP is OK for killing an hour or so, but the AI is too stupid to rate it as anything but a time sink.
