If I were Slaze, I'd say something along the lines of "Damn straight I'm working with Athlete. My civ is struggling under two wars, he's giving me a chance to recover back into the game, and I'm not seeing jack shit help from you guys. I'm doing what's best for my civ; I suggest the rest of you consider doing the same for yours."

And then maybe I'd declare war on Spulla, and get wiped out in a couple dozen turns smile

One strategy for a coalition would be to allow each other to steal techs. Tech trading is off, but techs can be acquired by stealing at less than half of research cost, especially if teams cooperate to set up the biggest discounts. I don't know if anyone will think of it though.

Unless Whoisit has been kept in the loop about Kathlete's possible deals, he might be very annoyed when he hears Ottoman is going to let Slaze send his full stacks against him.

Quite frankly the allies haven't really done anything together since the original CoW and since then they have actively hindered one another for the most part. Even if they thought of using espionage to steal techs, the level of trust required for that just isn't there at the moment.

The one thing we can be thankful for is that HRE are producing more than 400 beakers at full research, so they may be able to provide some of the tech counterbalance to Spulla. If they can only start seriously co-ordinating with their allies.

Ummm... I think you need to use spies to steal tech. And spies are banned in this game.

A new CoW could feed gold and units to Nakor and have him upgrade everything. They could give throw away cities to do it.

Because Spulla thinks that Slaze is playing both sides he still could get beaned...

Edit: Not anymore. I am recalling the game for Spulla.

I'm wondering how much Slaze's change of plans has to do with Sulla's response that they weren't going to attack Athlete. If Spulla had been willing, would Slaze have been content to get revenge on Athlete and Whosit? I think so. I suspect Sulla missed a great opportunity to keep some opponents tied up.

I don't see how a war with Athlete would have cost Spulla much. Just march a stack up where it can fork a couple of cities. If Athlete manages to defend each city with several longbowmen, then pillage a bit and leave knowing that those defenders cost Athlete a lot. However, doing this goes completely against their strategic doctrine, which calls for quick decisive strikes that gain territory or cripple people. So I wasn't surprised at all when Sulla didn't go for the idea of attacking them.

Did they realize that others wouldn't see things quite that way? They already expect that they will be facing another dogpile eventually. Do they like the challenge of just building up, securing Korea as a sole ally and telling everyone else to bring it?

I forget the details but I think there is some rule about temporarily gifting cities and units for upgrades.

I think part of why they don't attack, is they don't want to have to damage their economy even more. Even if they gained cities it would streach their borders alot along with requiring a lot of worker infrastructure to get everything going again.

The thing I haven't seen Speaker or Sulla mention is that their new city Kassite has buddhism in it. Doesn't that give Kathlete vision on the city? That might prove interesting in the future.

There are no rules about gifting units save not gifting heroic epic units when you don't have one.

I said throw away cities because after the massive upgrades the team could DoW on Nakor and raze it.

If you haven't seen Whosit's latest post, I highly recommend it. This could get very entertaining. Sure, most likely nothing will come of it -- Korea is too entrenched against Whosit after the Praetorian romp -- but think of how much of a surprise that would be for Kathlete.

And yes, it would be far more intriguing if Spullla weren't threatening to run away with the game, but I think posts like this are reason enough not to give up on the game even in light of the "runaway civ".

Eek. Just because we don't know for certain whether Athlete meant to put that in the IT thread doesn't mean we should be suggesting the possibility that Athlete might be thinking three steps ahead with this one. That question is really too leading, and might be suggesting the wrong thing. This moment is too important to risk lurker tampering.

IIRC spys are not allowed in this game, thus tech stealing isn't possible without breaking the rules set for this game...
