At one point there were some concerted efforts to have more games at a lighter level than RB Premier League, but we kinda dropped the ball on that later. Which is a shame, because there are quite a few lurkers out there who feel a bit intimidated.

Nah it's not that, I'm like really bad at civ 4. I can barely beat Emperor, and even then only with a strong start and a solid civ and everything. I think even the average noob would just crush me.

You are referring to our culture victory?
I think I was on civfanatics and linked over through Sullla as well.

Found RB through someone's signature on Civfanatics, around 15 years ago; I was looking for Civ 3 reports. I don't think it was T-Hawk or Sulla, so probably either Sirian or LtKender(?)

I first came across Realms Beyond via the Civ3 Succession Game forum at CivFanatics. This would have been in January or February of 2002, about three or four months after Civ3 was released. I was looking for more information about Civ3 and stumbled across the Succession Game forum, and found that there was this "RBD" group (Realms Beyond Diablo) doing all sorts of crazy things in their games. At a time when most of the succession games were taking place on Regent difficulty, occasionally on Monarch, these guys were playing on Emperor (RBD4) and kicking some serious behind. Or using nothing but infantry units (Sirian's Infantry variant) in a game where fast-moving horse units were the dominant force in Ancient era rushes. Or playing a game with no culture whatsoever (RBD13) and realizing that it was a surprisingly effective strategy, previewing the mass city spamming tactics which would eventually come to dominate high level Civ3 gameplay. I started out by reading their adventures, then joined in some of the succession games, and then soon enough made my way to Realms Beyond's old Network 54 forums.
I'm still here and apparently I've brought a lot of you along with me.

Yes that game. On his website, he makes it sound like team 1 is dominating but when I read the other threads, I couldn't believe that he was in a losing position since the game had elapsed quite a bit when I discovered it. Then I read over all the other played civ4 games.

Like many, I found my way here via Sullla's website. I was looking to improve my Civ4 game and his walk-through popped up when I searched for "Civ 4 tutorial". Read through it, then most of his other write ups, then came here to read through other players' reports. Only lurked back then because it was after BTS came out and I only had vanilla plus didn't think I could compete. Skipped 5 but when 6 came out, I decided to join in on the fun.

It is interesting that "can barely beat Emperor" is considered not just bad, but really bad at Civ IV in this community. I would guess that of all the people who have ever played Civ IV, most never got past Prince level (if that). Obviously that includes the vast majority of casual players; people with more experience in strategy games and 4X games would do better.
But when your community considers Emperor dificulty a mild warm up, you have a pretty hard core gaming community.
