I think that it may be better to do a snakepick instead of the PB 38/41 method that has been the vague consensus so far. The way I see it, the upside of a semirandom pick method is  that it forces players to use new and unusual combos rather than the same old Pro/Inca, Agg/Zulu, etc., but it also has the downside that players may be frustrated if they are forced into using something they find unfun or something that is anti-synergistic because of bad luck. The civilization changes that are included in the new version of RtR reduce the benefit and increase the detriment. The benefit of a semirandom method is reduced because so much has been changed that very few of the same old possibilities are left to be chosen at all (picking Pro/Inca or Agg/Zulu would be shooting yourself in the foot, for example), and there are a number of interesting, potentially powerful new combos to use instead. Trying new things is almost required. The detriment is increased because there are more anti-synergistic combos that would not be fun to have to play than previously (all of the unique building that traits don’t work on/the traits that don't work on them, Cre/Native America, etc.)

Why not do a snakepick?

Personally, it helps me stay out of my comfort zone on what i play. I still fully support the pb38 method of picking style, but i Could do snakepick.

You can join me if you'd like. I don't frequently read RB and this will be my second RB pitboss so I barely know the other players (other than Borsche who i know from another forum) so it'd be handy to have someone with RB meta knowledge to assist me.

I've lurked on here occasionally and this will only be my second pitboss as well, so I won't be able to offer the assistance you seek, but if you still want, I'd gladly join you.

The map is ready, the mod is ready (Download RtR 4.1.0.5 here), and I have sent PMs to a few people who I believe have the power to create new subforums, so that should be ready soon as well. The only thing left to do before we can make our threads, receive our starts, and begin the game is to finalize the settings. The settings as they currently stand are:

Quote:Mod: Rebalance the Realms 4.1.0.5
Difficulty: Monarch
Speed: Normal
Era: Ancient
Turn Speed: 24 real hours per one turn
Vassals, Huts, and Events: Off
Barbarians: On, Normal
Espionage: On
Diplomacy: AI diplomacy. No renaming cities or units to communicate. No trading cities. No using the trade screen to communicate, with one exception: same resource for same resource trade deals are allowed (Examples: fish for fish, copper for copper).
Double Moves: Regular Realms Beyond rules. Don’t be a jerk.
Map Trading: Not allowed
Pick Style: ?

To that list, I would like to add the provision: No unit gifting

I still stand by my desire to do a snakepick instead of an RNG dependent method, for the reasons mentioned previously.

Most of you said you don’t care much about the settings, but still, if there is anything in the above list you do not like, please speak now. Arguing over the settings once the starts are out seems like a bad idea, so I would like for this to be set in stone very soon.

Thanks Comm for being speedy.

I don't care about random vs snake pick, so I'll abstain unless a tie break is needed. Whatever pick method we choose, I suggest we see our starts before the pick phase starts.

No unit gifting sounds good.

i'd probably prefer a snake pick but i haven't really heard what the proposed "RNG" methods would be.

Also what are "same resource for same resource" trade deals meant to mean?
Reply

The random method proposed is to give each player a random set of 2 leaders/1 civ and let them choose to keep a leader, keep a civ, keep both, or re-roll. This goes on for 2-3 rounds. There's no possibility of holding on to a choice to see what you'd get later. Numbers of options and rounds can vary. Charriu put together a useful compendium of pick methods here.

Edit: Same resource trade deals are a way of sort of communicating through AI diplo. In the past offering a health resource for a health resource has meant you want to be friends. Offering a strategic resource for a strategic resource has meant you want to be military allies with the other player. As I understand it, this has been allowed in non-diplo games because its vague enough to be misunderstood and it allows a modicum of communication without moving the game's focus to far into a social sphere. More experienced players might correct the above.
