Quote:Map: Big and Small using Full of resources. Here is the map script and map settings file, however resource settings and start balance will be left to the map maker (none mirrored starts). To clarify this if I am taking on the map, how much editing are you looking for? 1. Am I to roll a number of maps or just take the first one? 2. Make sure everyone has reasonable access to strategics? 3. Rebuild starts or just buff/nerf them appropriately? In the case of buffing/nerfing, it should probably take account of overall map position rather than just starts? There seems little point in equalizing the start of players A and B if the rest of the map is better for player A. 4. Try not to touch anything outside of that?
Oh, good, Krill found another answer while I was too busy to check my PMs. If you want a second opinion on anything, TBS, I can probably find some time to look at a map, but I can't promise timely responses.
I'm sure Krill wants you to roll several and take the best one. Also put in strategics if necessary. The other questions I'm not sure about. Generally, though, the idea is for the mapmaker to do the bare minimum so that players can mostly blame the RNG not the mapmaker. Speaking of untimely responses, time for me to head outside and get some work done.

I'd like you to do as much balancing as you have time for... Other players may want it a bit more random.
I'm sure everyone would agree you should re-roll any maps with a start as bad as Lewwyn's in pb42.

As much as you feel comfortable with doing, and at a minimum what you think is necessary. Quote:1. Am I to roll a number of maps or just take the first one? Reject any map that you think has a start as poor as Lewwyns in PB42 (Did you read that game?) Quote:2. Make sure everyone has reasonable access to strategics? The map script is set up to ensure that there is one of every strategic resource closer to each player than to others, but that would need double checking that it's actually worked (as we all know, just because something is closer in tile distance doesn't mean that it is actually reachable if there are peaks or ocean in the way). This is something that needs checking, and as such, may need a tweak. This is expected. Quote:3. Rebuild starts or just buff/nerf them appropriately? In the case of buffing/nerfing, it should probably take account of overall map position rather than just starts? There seems little point in equalizing the start of players A and B if the rest of the map is better for player A. You have the skill and knowledge to be able to judge overall map position, but the point of this map script is not to give every player the same or equal overall position. So long as a player is not completely screwed over (crammed in a corner, or isolated, or has no resources such as Lewwyns PB42 start), then it's fair game: OH and Hitru won PB42 from a start location that would seem dire at best compared to some other players. The starts themselves are designed to have a minimum number of food resources, where food is any health resource except banana and deer (because fuck banana). I've been running the map script with either 2 or 3 food resources generated at the capital, and a further 2 or 3 resources generated in the first ring which essentially helps solve the Lewwyn problem. It's also set up to ensure that each player has a minimum of one early game happy "somewhere" in that first ring of cities near the capital. Even with all that, some starts will need to be rebuilt for a PB game. In my opinion, you can rebuild these starts as you see fit. For example, every player will need to be given a 2 hammer plant, this is not something the map generator will complete. You will likely need to add land to some starts, because there may be very few land tiles if a player starts on the isthmus; or you may decide that map is not reasonable and role another one. If you think the map should be re-rolled, re-roll it. And please make sure that teh capitals are relatively even (minimum 2 food resources, minimum 10fhpt at size 2 etc). The start generator still puts resources in a forest for some reason as well. Quote:4. Try not to touch anything outside of that? The map is a canvas. If you are finding yourself making changes here, there, maybe add something here, maybe take that a way, you've probably picked the wrong map. Thank you for offering to roll the map for use TBS
Edit: scrap that, the problems actually worse: We just need a couple more players to make a huge map fit better. Minimum 16 players really, but 18 would be great.
This is an updated version of the settings file with corrections
TBS: I'm posting this for your convenience. Other players: I'm posting it so you can look at teh map types generated.
Playing 14 on a large map means we're less likely to be operating ridiculous 50-city empires by t200...
