I wouldn't mind waiting. After all, if we continue, it's not like we'd be able to start playing anyway unless the ded-lurkers just take the opening entirely out of his hands, and without a way to contact him and let him know that seems a bit sketchy.

I don't see a problem with waiting, if we agreed to only start 9/1 anyways. By then everybody should have their first, second, third and fourth choices ready and the rest of the snake shouldn't take more than 1-2 days.
I mean it is for something that we set a starting date.
It's girafloren's game and I'm not going to take it away from him by picking for him.

Yeah I'm fine with waiting. Much worse would be him returning to a choice he has no interest in playing.
Otoh, Charriu can now add "dedlurker's choice" to his listing of pick methods, for if we want to try that some day.
That's not really a pick method, that's just getting a substitute to make your pick for you. You still need a real pick method, which in this case is snake.

What about a pick method where we snake pick a leader/civ combo, but for an opponent? That seems like it could be a much more interesting stress test for balance

70 tiles per player, whatever map type the bizzaro world is, feel free to chuck that idea in the general forum El Grillo.
Wasn't there some game where the lurkers picked stuff for people? I want to say that happened, some old person back me up. But yes lets wait. Everyone have picks, backup picks, and if your in 11th spot, random ideas ready. There would need to be a second step where all the reverse drafted combos are assigned to players somehow (presumably each player wouldn't be able to get the combo they drafted). You can do this to test balance for the worst combos against each other, or at least the perceived worst combos. Edit: Here's a reverse draft exhibition game from Heroes of the Storm, although it may not make any sense if you've never played the game. The game only has two teams so they are drafting for the opponent.

I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?
