GKC's BadGame PB13 Thread on RB (Now with Ladder Game Reports!)

That's probably the best Moai city I've ever seen.

Should be an easy win from here. I didn't see this thread earlier but I would've predicted a win starting from post #32, possibly as early as #21.

Borsche and Boak, who have appeared before on RB, are doing pretty decently. Borsche in particular is at 17 cities, (I'm at 21 as of this turn), and boak at 16. The rest are irreprably behind in the land-grab phase.

The problem here is the open diplo. Players can communicate openly in the main thread, send PM's, so a dogpile against me could be inevitable. I'll probably build 4 more cities at here, finish up land-grab and improvements, and kick off a likely second golden age, (unless I get a second merchant). At that point, I'll go for guilds and spam 2-turn knights out of my capital.

I like the earlier workshops in RtR - are workshops getting buffed in CtH?

I think workshops are fine as they are. They serve their purpose as the best general lategame improvement.

moving the bonus from guilds to engineering was the change i believe.

Can't say I'm happy with the game state. Lost the roll on great person, got a merchant whom I used to rush banking with enough overflow to get paper a bit faster.

Getting literature rn so that I can build national epic and get a second golden age off reasonably quickly, hopefully with a better roll (I'll run only one merchant...)

Demos look OK. CY leader as always, with a final city plant on the way. I have about 5 cities that are sorely underdeveloped right now, waiting on workers from the third layer of cities to finish urgent infrastructure.

Goal is to switch into merc/caste with the golden age, which will immediately boost MFG by a huge amount and give 22*3 science * multipliers. Representation would be nice to have over hered. rule.

Tech looks not as bad as I expected - I'm right in the middle of the pack - falling behind tech leaders TBW and especially the colossus + fin + half of the game's wonders Gashbears, who unfortunately is my neighbor.

Did a calculation, apparently running 0/100 does not do any better than 50/50. Might as well not run binary research for a few turns, since I'm getting a few cheap techs, and then save up for a beeline to cuirs.

Upside is that MFG is looking great given 2 civs are in golden ages.

Binary research does not give you more beakers by itself (other than possibly saving you a beaker due to rounding errors). Not sure why you would think that.

I was thinking about rounding errors - I thought that they accrued per city? Have I been mistaken this whole time?

Beakers (and gold) are only truncated to integers at the end. You can see in each individual city screen that they produce decimal amounts of beakers and gold.

Yeah, I figure once you get past the early game where the truncation actually has some impact on your tech rate, the benefits of binary are having added flexibility in that you can delay actually sinking beakers into a tech, and you can build up a bunch of turns of 100% research to build up an overflow chain through cheap techs to mask your actual progress to something like Liberalism. On a MP-meta level, you also have turns where you're showing max GPT in the diplo screen, which can be used to offer loans, which doesn't really work if you're always at breakeven.

There is a real mathematical benefit to binary research: delay your gold-to-beakers conversion until after you've built a science multiplier. Save up 100 gold, build a library, and then you can get 125 beakers out of it. You effectively get the science multiplier on economy produced before the library was built.
