Turn 91

ALRIGHT. That was an eventful turn. Let's talk about what happened.

This was what I found that triggered all of this. Clearly he intends to protect AT's capital. It's an interesting move because you'll notice AT's border cities are practically empty. He easily could have captured them, but he isn't doing that. I think he concluded that if I took the capital and he took all the southern cities, I'm still favored, and in the window where all the culture is gone he would be highly vulnerable to my superior Knights. I think that makes sense. I assumed he was going to move into his capital and defend it there given my unit gifting assumption. So I went ahead with the turn and made a few choices. Namely, I declared war on him. I informed him we needed to observe a turn split, and offered to let him continue to go first and have a 3-way split, or I could double-move and he could join AT's half. He preferred the latter. So, in we go.

Won that one.

Definitely won that one. That allowed me to capture his worker (the extra unit is someone else's. I added another pair of CKNs to that hill. I can't really take that city, but I can be annoying. It was at this point I offered him 200g for 10T of peace. The feeling was that would allow me to safely take AT's city, which I can't do with that stack added. I expected him to reject this, as it's still not a good deal for him. It was at this point the whole last 24 hours happened, but we seem to be fine now. I wasn't sure if he'd actually done any unit gifting, but his working in the organizing thread indicated he had done it because he worded it as "from now on." This makes some sense, as I noticed several spears showed up in AT's capital out of nowhere while he was still clearly whipping archers. I suspect Commodore gifted him a few. Not a big deal, as the HA/longbow stack is the real issue here as it would just stuff too many bodies into the capital for me to be able to handle just yet.

Since I can't take AT's capital, I might as well grab this city real quick. Once I secure it, I'll try to pivot and see if I can pressure Commodore some while I continue to add Knights (4 more end of turn). I can't let this drag on too long, because Cornflakes can really do some stuff here pretty soon from great people and golden ages. Commodore seems to view this setup as pretty zero sum. I understand the reasoning, but I'm not sure I quite agree. That said, I don't have much choice but to play into it, so I will. We'll see what I can do. I think we're going to be locked into war for quite awhile because he won't want to give me 10T to capture the capital. AT is going to have to live a lot longer than he probably hoped thanks to this. I'm not sure if he views that as a positive or negative. lol

Post-GA demos. As the newer cities come online, I expect this to start to improve pretty quickly. My break-even techrate is down to 30% though, largely due to larger army and more cities. I have huge maintenance costs everywhere. I'm going to pick up Banking here pretty soon and do a quick round of Bank whips when I get a chance. Thanks to FIN + OR netting me 125% towards them in addition to my low science slider, whipping them in seems really efficient. I rarely build them in games, but it feels OK here.

Turns 92-93

I took a trade I shouldn't have with Commodore. Well, the hammer trade was actually pretty much dead even, but in terms of value, not great.

I pivoted and picked off the top defender at 95% up here thanks to GG mobility, and added a bunch of Knights to finish it the following turn.

Confirmation of Commodore's plans to defend AT. I just flat didn't have the numbers here to win this, sadly. I simmed it, and it wasn't enough. I barely had enough to take it in 2 turns before his units showed up, and waiting any longer was going to result in me losing my stack. It was capturable until Commodore showed up, but what can I do for now. He's whipping himself hard to keep up in power, so I'm going to have to explore other avenues. I either need to force him out of this war, or I need to accept a stalemate, consolidate my gains, and try to get my land edge to start converting economically. If it was a straight 1v1 I could make gains, but it's a 1.5v1, so I'm stuck for a few.

Finally got Moai online. Slower than some of the other players, but it's life.

Time to take down the other 4 defenders. This should be easy, right?

Quote:T92:
GG Shock Knight vs axe 95%: win
T93:
C2 Shock Axe vs C1 Spear 89%: FLAWLESS win
C1 Shock Knight vs Archer 99%: win (8.6h)
C1 Medic Knight vs Archer 99%: win (7.2h)
Sentry Knight vs Archer 97%: withdraw
C2 Shock GG 8.4h Knight vs Archer 94%: FLAWLESS win
Drill3 CKN vs wounded archer 99.9%: win

And done. This should be a pretty slick city for me! Positioning is a bit awkward, but I can live with it.

Especially when it comes with a free Granary. Can't beat that.

So that brings me to 14 cities, and I'll be settling my 15th next turn. I can settle some fishing villages over here on the east side as well, and it's probably worth it to do so in this game. I think I'm at a stalemate offensively as long as I'm in a 2v1, so I might see whether AT is interested in stopping or not. I doubt he will be as he's ignored my peace offers completely, but the turn split is annoying if it's no longer necessary. He definitely can't counter-attack me, although I'd love to see him try.

What I don't really want is to let Cornflakes and TBS get into this game. Especially because both of them just popped Golden Ages, and Cornflakes completed Great Library this turn. He's got way less land than me, but his sheer wonder power is absurd. I'm going to have a nearly impossible time beating him to Liberalism, for example, because he's gonna bulb nearly all of it. As for Commodore, I'm not really sure what his endgame is here other than You Shall Not Pass, which, fair enough. Neither of us can make gains. I can try some cute stuff on boats, but nothing really substantial. I had hoped to get a bit more out of the CKN/Knight power spike, but I'm afraid I can't until Commodore feels pressured to go get some land of his own. As long as he's going to be The Defender, we're just letting the pack catch back up to us. I need to make his city and trait deficit pain him a bit more than it is right now to force him occupy himself elsewhere.

This is one of those times where actual diplomacy would help a lot. For example, I'd be amenable to some deal where I get AT's capital and he gets the rest without my pressure. Of course, that's a bad split for him on the surface, but the key meta difference here is that he's got a second weak neighbor in Cairo, which is a luxury no other player has. He's got the easiest path to top land area. Wonder when he'll make any sort of attempt to capitalize on that.

Turn 94

Got myself City #15 this turn. This puts me pretty well clear of everyone else at this stage. Kind of a meh filler city, but it's worth it with the traits I have. It's not a net positive immediately or anything like that, but it pays back decently fast with FIN coast and a healthy trade route pairing. This reminded me that I needed to rename some cities.

Here they all are. New Coke should be a nice city for me. I'm going to try to get some more culture going in there in addition to the free Henge Monument because Sack will pop its borders again eventually, and things will get awkward when that happens. I'm going to get some Walls in here shortly too. I forsee this as another cottage cheese location due to the river, but it may be hard to realize that until AT's capital is gone, whenever that might be.

Deep State will just be a military whipping post. Work coast, whip military, do nothing else. No real commerce potential, and 2 of its 3 best tiles can get handed off. Fluoride is a nice well-rounded city with two foods, 4 cottageable flatland riverside tiles, and a slick grassland hill Spices tile. New World Order has excellent commerce potential and enough food to grow quite tall.

Anyway, my various fronts with Commodore continue to be an awkward stalemate. This is good for neither of us. All it does is drag me back to the pack. It lowers my chances of winning, yes, but it raises the odds for TBS and Cornflakes about equally, so it doesn't actually really help Commodore. I know he loves throwing winnable games away with obviously dumb wars (hello PB49), but I'm willing to work to give him an out to feel like he accomplished something. So, let's see if I can try to talk some sense into him by doing some non-diplo diplo. Due to the nature of peace deal rules (only one side can offer something in a peace deal), I had to split my suggestion up into several diplo windows that he'll receive one by one. Here's what I sent him.

I think the offer is pretty clear. It basically says: I will pay you 300 gold (200 + 10gpt) for peace. In addition, I will actually guarantee you 20T of peace rather than just 10. This number is negotiable to me, though that may not be clear. Use this time to take some free cities from AT and/or invade Cairo, and I will let you do it untouched. The subtext: this will push us forward to clear #1 and #2. I will probably be ahead, but geopolitics will be heavily on his side, so he will have options.

I genuinely think this is a decent deal for Commodore that increases his odds of winning. It increases mine too! No question. But the cost is to Cornflakes and TBS, and either of them getting into a dominant position is worse for him because one of them he physically can't get to, and the other will 100% win this game if he even gets a sniff of a good position. Curious what lurkers think, although sadly you probably can't post it here. I bet Commodore rejects this because of course, but I think what I've offered is reasonable. He slowed me down, extracted 300g, and secured a pseudo NAP he can most likely rely on. I think that's a good haul?

To be clear, I believe he will reject the offer. I just wanted to document it. Commodore, when you're reading this post-game after congratulating TBS on the most incredible come from behind win in RB history, I just wanted a clear marker to remind you who he has to thank for it. wink

Any thoughts on any potential situations around the former Pilage?

I assume you're asking about this?

Hmmm. Is there a way to edit unit health in worldbuilder btw? I may need to sim this.

Commodore counter-offered me this. Unfortunately, I can't look around much prior to seeing this. I closed the window, but I'm tempted to re-offer. Is it kosher to re-offer and see if he would login to consider the offer prior to me playing the turn? I feel like I remember that being a thing in the past, but I'm not sure. I'm guessing no? This is my biggest annoyance with AI diplo. It's so incredibly hard to actually make deals during a turn split.

Commodore culture bombed Bigfood. 47 is what percent my culture was at on that tile last turn - I'd been tracking it because I was on pace to flip it. Now I'm kinda screwed down here, because while he didn't flip much, he will flip some of these tiles soon thanks to how culture works. Lots to think about. Didn't touch any units, will have to play later tonight.

Unit health cannot be edited in the WB.

... but it can be if you text edit the worldbuilder file.

I can insist that Commodore and AT play in order, correct? So, last turn Commodore started his turn before AT, but that was very brief. The majority of his turn was played after him. I want to ensure there's no turn sharing shenanigans to make sure the units hit Pillage in the ideal order. I can insist on that, right?

id hope so.
