But luckily, I have some things I need to do that I want to procrastinate, so you get a report. Who are my neighbors: *NW: Frozen. Victoria (IMP/FIN) of Babylon. He showed up with an axe some turns back and delayed my gold city. He wasn't aggressive, but the presence of that axe hindered me. Overall, he seems peaceful and he could have given me a lot of trouble with that axe if he wanted. He expanded pretty fast and took a lot of the island cities that I feel we should compete for. He's up to 13 cities and I think he reached 13 when I was at 9 cities still. I'm revealing most of his lands (open borders) and it seems he chopped and whipped a lot (his Capital was size 5 while mine was size 8 already). He has IW already and a big happy cap, that I don't think he's using well. Military seems to be loads of axes. He's dominating me in food, but that's to be expected with IMP against ORG/AGG. In the ling run, he won't have that many more cities than me, due to the blobs. *NE: Cornflakes. Pericles (CRE/PHI) of Native Americans. He's up to 11 cities, but I was at 11 while he was at 9. Not a lot of naval development that I can see. I think we are on a peaceful relation as well. We have OB. He already popped a GSci, I think he got an academy. Dominating on the GNP graph, but he's CRE, something to take into account. My Capital is also more developed than his. I took the fur island that I think we should battle for, so I have to be careful on that front. His northern neighbor is Jowy (6 cities), so I don't think he wants to mess with me, when there's better low hanging fruit. *South of me through the water, NE of Frozen through land: Piccadilly. Willem (CRE/FIN) of Mali. Also expanded very fast, he's at 12 cities now. We have OB, but I haven't sent a unit there to explore his land. Just recently discovered that we "border" through the sea. He was at war with Jowy for some time, so I think they have a land border. We can't perhaps fight because of the island between us, but it's probably better to be in good terms and try to double team Frozen. But again, why would he double team Frozen when he has Jowy as his neighbor? *NW of Cornflakes, likely to be a water border to my south: Jowy. Kublai (CRE/AGG) of the Byzantines. He's at 6 cities and that tells you most of the story. I think he was at 2 cities while everyone else was at 5/6. He founded Judaism while CRE and Byzantines. That also says a lot. Probably not long for this world (probably dead to Trebs + something, will not survive knights, for sure), so CF and Piccadilly have a very nice position. *naufragar, João (IMP/EXP) of the Vikings. Met his galley and gave him open borders to go through. Hopefully he doesn't make anything stupid. Probably far enough away that we shouldn't be bickering right now. As you can see, I was not very lucky in the neighbor pinata. Frozen seems to be very competent. CF doesn't seem to be playing with 100% of his power, but he's also very good. So, my expansion prospects are very limited. My current plan is to go after Frozen. Yes, he's FIN, but he expanded fast and got IW very early (for gems), so he's not on the most optimal economic path. His cities are small (so I'm not seeing the benefit of getting the gems online this early with IW) and I'm not seeing that many cottages. Perhaps I can get a decent tech advantage at some point and make some gains against him. As I'll tell you when I make my domestic situation post, I have a very nice economic situation, I think. I could go to guilds, but perhaps AGG gives me some advantage before that? Not sure.
Urgent lurker question: how can I make my unit auto-promote when I end turn? If you guys can answer me, I'll give a turn report. And you may be interested to know that I just declared war.

Thanks a lot, everyone, I own you updates.
Speaking of civforum.de, how is Frozen and Dulland seen in that forum? Are they consider top players? Perhaps I should have asked this before attacking them. ![]() (May 26th, 2021, 14:47)Ichabod Wrote: Thanks a lot, everyone, I own you updates. I take it that answering such a question is ok? I feel there's no problem. My question is more tongue in cheek, really. I'm just wondering if I messed up with the Germanman mackoti and I'm officially toast. ![]() Civ really shows to me how I'm a "Too afraid to be happy" person, as we say in Brazil. I feel like I'm a bit more propositive (rather than reactive) with my game plans than I was when I started playing. But even so, I lack that extra step that "people who win" take. Speaking outside of riddles and into a game related example, I've sent an exploring galley to Frozen/Dulland coast. They are leading in number of cities, but they don't have a lot of power. Also, I was scouting them and I could see that most of their power was elsewhere (they heavily colonized the "center of the map", which requires lots of defenses). They had empty cities near my border, with token defense. So I had a reasonable guess that I would find something to prey on. First city I've seen is defended by a single warrior. Young and naïve Ichabod would have an empty galley and would kick himself over it. But battle-scarred Ichabod has an axeman on his galley. He attacks and conquers the city. His axe takes more damage than would be expected, but it can survive most counter-attacks with a decent chance. But what if Frozen has a chariot to attack and take the city back? Was all of this worth it? Here's where I made the mistake that haunts me: I could easily have an extra archer in the galley. I would have let one of my cities without a defender for 2/3 turns over it, but it was not a border city. Why didn't I do it? Why didn't I prepare for the good scenario, the one where I conquered a city from Frozen? I would have a new city, that Frozen could not easily retake, with an axe + archer. That's what I mean by "afraid of being happy": from the get go, I never considered the scenario where I won, even when there was no risk involved to prepare for it. As a result, I'll probably just lose instead. I can perhaps get very philosophical and psychological here, but it clearly shows that I'm not really a winner kind of person. |
