Combat workers is one of those things a human will do that a AI won't. Combat settlers is also a thing, but mainly later on.

Well this game is coming to an end I feel. I was not expecting my army to die with so little damage done to the enemy.

What do you think went wrong or what was the cause for this outcome?

Declaring war on Rome. Not settling that area soon enough. I should have forward settled that area.

[JesseL]

India has declared war on me also. I will try to drag this war out as long as possible.

If you want to drag it out then why did you move those axeman out of your capitol. Looks like they would get the best odds there.

They will be able to move between both cities now, depending on which one Rome goes for.

At least I got revenge and razed Gem City to the ground.

That's a nice revenge raze at least. Tough luck with the war overall, praetorians and catapults are a nasty stack to face this early on before you have collateral damage of your own.
