Thrawn, just to be clear, pick whichever option you want out of the available five, as I have no original thoughts as of now except I'd probably err for a "better" pick position than play position.

Right now we need to focus on what decisions are going to be made, and they are choosing a pick position, and then choosing the civs. I think we just need to hold back on making any judgements until we have the maximum information, but focus on what strategies we think we will need to employ to counter what the others do. Everything else is just wheel spinning, takes up energy and gets us no where.
For example, if we think Ljub and TAD are going to pick up something to take out opponents at frigates, what do we think they would pick, and how do we stop that (either in game, or would we want to try and co-opt that strategy ourselves).
Hell, it is probably all wheel spinning anyway.

Our strategy is whatever you say it is. I'm not much for anything but asking the stupid questions to male sure we aren't making stupid mistakes, and trying to understand what the other players are thinking.
I need to point out that the only game I actually played to a finish is PBEM. Beyond that I played one game in October 2020 to around t160 against AI which was essentially won. At least that was as England on an island map.
We can play this whichever way works best, with more equal civs or with a minor civ which provides resources to the major civ, based around. Either way we need the pair to work together but if the minor/major has several civs for each part then that might be a safer route if we have the head and tail of the pick order.

So the question is, do you want 3/6 and a decent chance of a plan, or do you want to pick 1/8 and have the chance of perfect reply. Either makes sense, but I have to ask if there is any civ out there that is a worth 1st pick above all others, and any point where there is a true ideal reply (like picking Saladin in a game where you know the last GP will be spawned really early?)

Agreed on Spain and Portugal, thought they were considerations for 8th as a potential response.
Looking forward to reading your thoughts.
