[SPOILERS] swans will bite u

Really wish we were picking 4/5 now...

The other thing with Portugal is that there's no reason Norway would or should be the only one trying to pilfer them. Declaring an early war to snipe a far flung trader is often going to be worth it, as is declaring war to prevent trading posts from being established. I'm anticipating that both Thrawn and the Portugal player will be in basically an always war situation, Norway voluntarily and Portugal because they have no choice. As nice as all those trade routes would be if left undisturbed... yikes. Not happening.

If we're worried about Thrawn turning stolen Portuguese gold into a winning edge, I still don't think that's a good reason to make it gold stolen from us. We could just as easily use Jongs to jump on a Portuguese team weakened by the loss of basically the only thing that makes them worthwhile, and snowball ourselves to a winning position that way. Us not taking Portugal also opens the possibility of a Portugal/Phoenicia combo for Chevalier or Woden, basically the only pairing that should neutralize longship pillages, which of course would put that team in an amazing spot instead of Thrawn.

My instinct here is not to get cute, and to stay out of the most obvious mutually destructive early war situations. We should take Indonesia, figure out the gold at #7, and plan to jump on whoever looks weak enough for us to obliterate them.

ugh but it's even worse for us than that because indonesia + gold civ may be even weaker to thrawn than portugal frown jongs don't win unless you can fund them and that means defending harbors and trade routes with no naval UU. and unlike portugal i don't think indo can take victor 3 before pingala because they NEED the culture for mercs frown

Thrawn can't attack everyone. He's got one civ, probably 2-3 cities, and a bunch of units that have to be either very selective or massed together. Portugal is a problem because the traders will go all over the place and through spaces where they literally cannot be protected, but Spain or England or whoever are going to be less vulnerable. We could even bet on Mali as the designated weak civ; they kinda suck but they sure do generate gold, and in a way that Norway can't touch.

Thrawn is going to really hurt whoever he decides to attack first, but he's also going to stunt his own short term growth curve doing it, and if that target puts up a good defense neither they nor Thrawn will win. We can't guarantee anything, but we can make ourselves one of the less attractive primary targets and hope someone else creates a quagmire.

Jongs are also the first unit to arrive that can tell longships to fuck right off to the bottom of the ocean consistently. Smaller window of vulnerability there. Chevalier showed that Jongs can be slowed by galley spam, but that was a half-assed assault by Suboptimal and we will do better than that.

holy crap, if thrawn really does go victor + TV + oligarchy their longships attack at 51, and if they can get a second promotion they defend from frigates at 61. that is a unit that BEATS an unpromoted frigate in a one on one fight......

if the operating theory is

- whoever thrawn rushes will not win because they will be too developmentally stunted
- thrawn will target portugal as first priority because of the traders and indonesia as second priority bc no early shipbuolding edge and they need to be slowed before jongs

the defensively spikiest early civ seems to be phoenicia. that also denies portugal/phoenicia to the likes of chev and woden, and if portugal DOES drop to 7th because everyone is afraid of them we have our combo?

I can get behind that. And even if those assumptions about the behavior of other players don't hold (odds are were wrong about something) Phoenicia is just a flat good civ, totally defensible at #2 on their regular merits.

how has the RB civ6 meta reached the point where we are seriously saying stuff like "phoenicia is the best pick, at #2, because of the bireme and its ability to prevent trade route pillages"....

I'd say Norway at #1 is even nuttier from that perspective, no econ benefits worth a damn except what they can pillage from opponents? But you can't say it doesn't work!
