Love the updates.

Who or what are you worried about? Who is your next victim (murderer)? How do you rate your position?

I don't think I've ever read a comment from someone saying they didn't like hte story posts, but that last one might be the meanest story post you've written on this site.

I'm worried about Bing snowballing so far that absolutely none of us can catch up:

So I have sent a proposal to Magic Science...
...fifteen turns is realistic. Ten turns to the Pilsner Great Scientist, and I think I can get Chemistry precisely to the point where it'll be able to fully bulb (NOTE TO SELF: RESEARCH ALPHABET). I'm going to do what I did with the knight mass, where I got 20 knights in five turns, except it'll be Risengardes. AKA: Bierzenempiragartenurweaponzgaurdensmashurs

My position? I'm about to be in last place.

Poor legionary. He deserved better. We all did.

So I'm feeling much more secure thanks to knights, but I kind of regret not getting Engineering faster. Castles are 29h with a forge, or 31h without, for 3 to 5 commerce per turn, that's a 10-turn payback horizon. Protective loves castles so very much. Plus the +100% defense will stop those vast mace and knight stacks butt cold.

Gunpowder incoming in six turns. Need to make all the walls I want beforehand. I will not actually be making a massive round of muskets; most of my pre-risengarde building will be catapults.

Yeah, castles are awesome, especially if you have PRO or stone, and the key reason why I've played spain the last two games (first one didn't count). As an extra bonus, don't forget the EP modifier and bombardment rate reduction.

I'm still trying to figure out how it too so long for all of us to accept just how game changing castles can be. When was the first time that the realization? Com, you probably know that given how many games you;ve played in over the course of RB history.

I'm not exactly sure, but it was in the last ~7 or so. It coincided with the major metagame shift to the lower portion of the tech tree, when we started prioritizing Steel/MilSci over the Sulllanesse/Single Player middle-tree path to Liberalism/Taj Mahal/Drafting rifles/massing cavalry. I know I had early success in that shift but it's very much the bog standard now. The free commerce from castles really is huge alongside the way they completely shut down efficient conquest for pre-Gunpowder units. Bing's front city just has three pikes and three longbows, which would be very overrunable were it not for the castle they're behind.

I don't know if I mentioned it, but fascinatingly enough in this game here Pindicator is actually following the 2013 RB meta. He got into Bureaucracy, took early Paper for the UoS, and just landed Banking, which is common enough but given his positioning with the middle of the tech tree he's actually poised to sweep the Economics merchant, nail Nationalism for Taj, and then Lib Military Tradition, then hurriedly get Rifling. The only person in a position to stop that is...me, but unfortunately that'd be attacking an equal-sized foe at tech parity. Which means we both lose. And then Bing wins if he piles in on my rear. I want to be able to hit Bing along with Magic Science, but I'm not sure if he's willing to get going and he has the cash-rich but land-poor Nogglefrogger nipping at his heels if he does that. As dangerous as Pindicator is potentially with his sweeping the tech tree, Bing is even worse.

Close to Home Serfdom is a horrible trap, by the way. Magic Science is very impressive right now but he's not going to scale at all going forward with all those 3/0/2 or 2/1/2 farms in his central riverlands. Nogglefrogger is even worse somehow, relying on a good shrine/Spiral Minaret and lake-side plains Serfdom farms. Neither one of those two are going to scale at all going forward, so I think their potentials are basically finished.

Agree with what you say about the shifting meta, but the unspoken part is that they expire early if you go the middle path, and thus much less worth building.

In my mind, the farm commerce is only really relevant for golden ages; CtH serfdom is all about the windmill, especially if you can combine with an early push towards rifling.

I thought the bottom of the tech tree became the de facto beeline since at least PB8 and possibly before?

So here is a question to reflect upon for you: how do the ingame economies scale into the rennaissance and Industrial eras? And what is the expected number of turns between military techs?
