I just finished a 6-part, >8k word review of an indie TTRPG system I bumped across. Really enjoyed the exercise.

So is HoA any good? How does it compare to BECMI or AD&D?

Well, this is from a close read, not any running, but I'd compare it most with d20 (D&D 3+) systems, that's probably the bulk of the source DNA. Heroes in HoA will begin more powerful than BECMI or AD&D (although way more fragile than a 5e character), with an upper-level cap that's less powerful than -CMI or high-level AD&D. Primary rewards are going to be more quest-based than gold=XP systems, which will obviously effect the core gameplay loops. It's admirable, frankly an astonishing level of production for a free product, and I'm completely confident anyone running or playing it would have a good time. All that said, I wouldn't try using it for AD&D-type gaming.
To quote myself:
Quote: I think, ultimately, the Heroes of Adventure Fantasy Adventure Game is…fine. Can I imagine playing it and having fun? Of course. Could I imagine running it for a year of progress over a 1-10 campaign, discovering a compelling emergent story with my friends? Yes, if I could find four others interested in the indie system. But unfortunately, a dark secret that all reviewers of TTRPG products must admit is that these games are one of the most inherently fun and enjoyable activities known to mankind. It's actually quite difficult to not have fun with a good group of friends, eating pretzels, drinking beer, and throwing dice. Heroes of Adventure is a perfectly cromulent game engine to use for this.

Sounds like it's worth a read through to loot some ideas at least, especially for the price of free.

In a bit of a tactically annoying situation here. About to hook the gold to help the unhappiness and I'm safe on all fronts, but it's an annoying invasion.

Last time I played D&D I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time.
RB needs an old-timer smilie.

...Aren't all smilies old timer smilies? I mean, they come from a time when the internet couldn't even use animated gifs due to bandwidth issues...
