Medieval Start PitBoss

I must admit that I've started tinkering with a 5 player map, but nothing that can't be reused in some way. If anything, six is easier, but I think I've got a setup that works well with five, advanced or not.

Advanced can lead to very early contact, and as was said the last time, it's possible to lose advanced start on t0.

Thems rookie numbers. I've lost games in the picking phase before.

True. Note that it's possible to tone down advanced start with less points, the default seems to give you about four cities and a tech, but you could swap the tech for units, buildings or improvements.

How do you feel about toroidal wrap?

Like a normal start only for a lot more "thee's" "thou's" "forsooth's" &c. Or if you want authenticity, Chaucer.

Not a sign-up, just general sillyness.

Oh it's definitely possible to lose in the game signup phase.

Fine with me given that CtH fixes toroidal maintenance IIRC.

Yes, CtH "fixes" toroidal maintenance. The issue is in the function to determine "max plot distance" which is used to calculate distance maintenance. On a map that wraps in one direction, this max distance is half of that direction's dimension. If the map wraps in both directions, it used to be half of the lowest dimension. This means there is no difference for square maps, such as PB70, and for very lopsides maps such as PB59 it gets extremely high.

While toroidal maps can look natural on a micro level, they most certainly do not on the macro level. Personally my head can start spinning on maps such as PB66.

I'm good with locking in at 5 players.  It works well for religions and turn pace.  smile

I'd prefer something other than Great Plains as our map.   PB71 was a blast but I'd like some decent land to work with for a change.  lol

So far it looks like I'm the only one in favour of advanced start for this game with everyone else either mildly or strongly against so that's a NO.    Maybe next game?

Toroidal.....fine I guess?

We still need to squabble over discuss pick method.

I think a snake pick gives us all the best chance to lose the game before turn 0 so I'm in favour of that.
