[PB78] Dreylin boldly goes

What went wrong with the growth? If you have a full food box while building a foodhammer unit, the city still grows. (The only ways to get to that state are to whip so that the food box shrinks and is now full, or to have set Avoid Growth on the previous turn.) If it was full but didn't grow, did you still have Avoid Growth on?

So to clarify, growth occurred as expected. What I was trying to do was one of those cool "filling the food box on a new granary by avoiding growth" tricks that I see some of the other players doing sometimes (scooter did it recently in PB77, I think).

What I did was:

t1 - Finish Terrace and also filled size3 foodbox exactly. Turned on Avoid Growth.
t2 - still size 3, turned off avoid growth. Started Settler.
t3 - grow to size 4, empty foodbox.

I had thought that the food on t2 would build up in the foodbox, but now I realise that by building a foodhammer unit the food doesn't touch the food box, so I didn't gain what I had hoped for. Or maybe it's because there was no overflow and I needed to avoid growth for another turn? Either way, I still don't understand the trick! bang

For the record I lost 1h & 2c from this, and I'm sure I've made worse mistakes already.

What you saw is correct by my understanding. If you're building a foodhammer unit, no food goes into the granary's hidden storage that turn.

You never actually produced any food inbetween finishing the granary and growing (including on the turn of growth).

What you did wrong was building a foodhammer unit on the turn of growth. If you hadn't, all of your food surplus that turn would also have been retained by the granary.

Lesson learned, next time I'll probably get it right... wink

Did Thrawn accept the copper for gold/fish trade? And I assume he hasn't been able to recapture the lost city yet?

He did accept. I expect he needs a few Spears to cover from Gav Chariots & MS Immortals. Gavagai’s SW city has pretty much blocked the bulk of our border with MS, so that’s one fewer thing to worry about - and a silver lining I suppose.

Magic Science declared on thrawn, so those Spears are going to be a timely addition. shhh

Scott was founded this turn:

Forest chop completes next turn and then the supertile will be cottaged. The Barb city across the straight is looking quite juicy; my Chariot has just rounded the end by green dot and will head down to take a look. Spock will work on a replacement once the current Archer is completed.

Expenses ticked up of course and I can't 100% my way to Writing; I left it at 100% this turn, but will decide next turn whether it's worth losing the rounding beakers to finish it in 2t more at breakeven or save for a turn so we can run 100% to the end.

None, turned out it was MS on Gav and now they are at peace. perhaps some negotiation over settling locations as MS planted a city.

Anyway, back home and Gav has stationed a Warrior on the hill SSE of Spock to watch the city. Not too happy about that so I have covered it with a fresh Archer to return the watching. I started a Chariot, but will switch to a Library ASAP to get the borders moving.

I'm break-even at 60%, so this turn I'm running 30% for +10g, then next turn I'll be able to return to 100% to finish Writing. That will also coincide with Kirk whipping the Settler and generating a bunch of overflow into it's own Library. Kirk will probably slow-build while regrowing, though I am wondering if I should add a forest chop to speed it up. Kirk has 5 forests and I'd like to keep as many as possible for a Wonder - I'd love to land Pyramids, but wouldn't think of trying until I've liberated Spock's Stone.

I've decided to send the Settler to Blue dot rather than push out to Green yet; I don't quite feel comfortable that I have enough military on-hand to support the plant and this gives McCoy a chance to generate that support - and maybe also a unit to scout a bit farther North and West.

I'm so slow sometimes:

Eridu culture-flipped New Reno on the island!  duh  (Checked Superdeath's city list since he's not renaming) I bet that's how thrawn got his Gold as well!

I wonder if it's practical for us:

Guess not.  alright

Looks like Superdeath is lined up to take a second Barb city:

He has 2 more Chariots arriving and is likely waiting for it to grow first. I'm heading my Chariot past the area as I don't want to provoke anything.

Meanwhile back home:

Pity the first spread is a manual one, but it's right on time to power Scott's Terrace whip. Haven't decided what to build here next; I do need a Quechua for MP at Uhura, but I could also take advantage of a scouting workboat that would then be available for the Clams at Orange.

After the Terrace is whipped, I may switch back to Hinduism for a spell to give Kirk the OrgRel benefit on its Library - although it would delay the border expansion at Scott. Spock will be at size6 in 5t, so is lining up to 3-pop whip the Library there. I do need to pause the build next turn though incase I get a religion spread to power the whip.

You can also see that Kirk has kept the Corn rather than pass it straight to Uhura - this is so it can reach size3 in 2t (rather than 4), after which it will pass. Uhura is currently working the Horses to get a leg up on the Terrace build.

In the North, McCoy is about to finish a Barracks and then start cranking out some unit to hold the NE and scout out North and West.

As you can see I'm placeholdered on HBR; here's the overall tech situation:

I think that Meditation, Priesthood and Sailing are all Superdeath - I think he got the culture inflection from the Religion, and then Priesthood makes sense for his Ziggurats. I haven't seen any built yet, but I also haven't seen the oracle fall which I would have expected if one of the IND leaders had targeted it. (I would need a couple more Workers before thinking about going for it at Kirk).

I am guessing that the other Sailing is Thrawn, since the Gold strongly implies he also has an island city. I suspect that Iron Working is likely to be them given their lack of secured Copper. I'm certainly hoping they have it online before I need to take back the trade and put out my own Spears.

50+ turns still remaining before the Barbs are released, but I don't think there's much more time before we need to start fully preparing - hence HBR. The plan would be to put a Stables in McCoy, get 2-3 HA out quickly and train them by taking out the Oromo, meaning they'd need to cover fewer potential vectors for Barb arrival.
