I might revisit Civ6 if/when they release a complete edition with all the DLC. Wasn't willing to support the DLC model they adopted in the latter part of the game's lifecycle
Civilization 7 is in development

The Civ 6 Anthology bundle has everything in one place now, and does take into account anything you have already purchased.
Thanks, I went ahead and picked up the rest. Guess I'm out of excuses to play now

Civ 6 is currently my go-to. I don't play Civ 4 anymore, modded or otherwise.
While it's a game that's definitely balanced around SP rather than MP (some civs are vastly more powerful than others), I think there are a lot more avenues to success than in Civ 4, where the only goal is to increase commerce. Different civs and different strategies will focus on different districts and different ways to grow. I think there's a lot of strategic depth. I think there's also plenty for players who like to micro. Like Krill said, planning your districts in advance is a big deal. Most of my nitpicks are in the late game, but I think that's been true of most versions of Civ. My one other general complaints is the movement rules, where you cannot move into a tile unless you have full movement points required, unlike in Civ 4. I know this is an old complaint lol. It would just solve a lot of traffic jams if it were a little more lenient. Otherwise, for a one unit per tile game, it's not terrible. I also personally dislike how strategic resources work in the late game, where it becomes VERY difficult to acquire enough oil to support even a modest army, but for others that might be a point of appeal. I'd definitely love to play more Civ 6 games here, but I think I have to stick to 1 game at a time for my own sanity. XD
I won't be getting civ 7.
I pretty much lost interest with 5 when it went to 1 unit per hex. I tried a bit of 6, but never got very good. The game no longer felt strategic when the combat went to a tactical system.
I only picked it up after the third DLC, but Civ6 is a fun game for competitive multiplayer. The Civplayers (CPL) community mods (Better Balanced Game, Better Balanced Maps, Multiplayer Helper) have improved it a lot, but the pacing is poor (games take way longer than Civ4), and the netcode is absolute shit. There are so many UI and features that for some reason were dropped from Civ4, like certain hotkeys, shortcuts for build queues, waypoints, etc. Honestly, I think the game is only good by luck, and hard-work by the CPL modders to improve balance. Un-modded Civ6 is horribly unbalanced.
All of CPL is very un-optimistic about Civ7. I don't actually think the Civ-switching will be as bad as many of the biggest doomers do. Competitive Multiplayer is not about the roleplaying, lore, or immersion, just about the bonuses/strategy. Removing builders, tile development, and other elements of micro is very concerning, as those are prime areas for skill expression. The stated max of 5 players in an MP game will make it very unlikely to ever be picked up by the CPL community, unless that changes. Great to read many of your names. Fond memories of playing Civ3 and Civ4 with many of you! "There is no wealth like knowledge. No poverty like ignorance."
Just noticed that the game is available on Steam. At those price points it's a firm no from me.
Tbf £60 is pretty much the standard price for AAA releases nowadays, Civ6 was £50 on preorder and game prices went up since then
I'm more concerned about them saying something along the lines of "we're planning to support this game for years to come", which nowadays tends to mean "regular small DLCs" rather than "regular updates and patches". They leaned heavily into DLC model towards the end of Civ6, and I'd be surprised if it doesn't continue for Civ7
The 'dribble out multiple DLCs' model is unfortunately all too common these days. I agree with Tarkeel that at this price point with more spending required for DLCs to come, I will take a pass on Civ7. Civ5 and Civ6 were both disappointments at launch, for me anyway. Firaxis is not targeting players like me any longer. I will wait for the inevitable 'game of the year' or 'complete' edition down the road a year or two, when it is on sale. If the game does turn out to be fantastic and gets a strong community response, I can always buy it then.
