Civ 5 tech support

Okay so I was able to install and play Civ 5 on my laptop.

This evening I tried to run it on my desktop. I downloaded Steam, logged in, and selected Civ 5, and downloaded it form Steam.

But if I try to run it, I get the popup to choose DirectX9 or 10/11.

If I choose 10/11, I get a Windows popup saying Civilization 5 had a problem and had to close

If I choose 9, I get a brief Civ window that then closes within 1 second.

I have Vista - I'm not sure what kind of graphics card I have but it doesn't even seem to get that far.

I looked at the civfanatics tech support forum but didn't see anything that seemed to match

If you aren't sure about what gfx card you have, here's what to do.

Open the menu that used to be the Start menu (what do we call it now? The Windows menu?) and type dxdiag into the search, then press Enter. On the window that pops up, move to the Display tab, and provide a screenshot of that. Alternatively, you can press the Save All Information button, save the text file to your desktop, and either upload the text file somewhere or just copy and paste it into a post.

DX9 should be safe, no? Or is there some sort of DX9 bug?

DX10 requires Vista/7 and a video card made in the last couple of years.

okay, so here's my question regarding this graphics card issue, cause my comp is performing the same stunts (will go to the "Direct x9 or x10/11 page, but no matter which you click nothing pops up or it pops up then disappears).

I have a ATI Radeon X300/X550/x1050 Series card on the system (desktop) and I've run through all the possible updates listed above and still nada. Is this card even sufficient to run the game, or should I just go out and buy a new card?
