So a little bit about my plan for the map, and possibilities. I've got a few ideas and I'd like to get a bit of feedback one what people think about these possibilities
1) I want to craft each start to be balanced as best I can, probably using mirrored resources within the BFCs
2) I want to go toroidal
3) There has been some thought to 2 continents, I'm thinking maybe 3
4) I am considering some mountain ranges with more choke points
5) I think maybe a few small astro islands (5?), but nothing game breaking on them. Possibly a separate calendar happiness that is only found on these islands?
6) I want to put one jungle tile in everyone's capital BFC. There are two options. Either A) everyone gets a jungled banana or B) Everyone gets a jungled gems. both of these are interesting in different ways. If I go gems, it gives an incentive for an earlier iron working as opposed to the more traditional go straight for currency calendar. If I go with bananas I give everyone an incentive to get to IW for clearing the banana, but also I wantn to present this as an opportunity to settle ON TOP of the banana for a 3f capital. Everyone will have a PH to settle on, but also a possible banana as an alternate choice. Of course I will want to try and balance the alternate banana cap BFCs across the board as well. I'm thinking the banana move has to shift the BFC off of one of the cap's better food resources, but gives access to a slightly less good food resource in return. I am not sure which of these two (jungled gems or jungled bananas) present the players with a more interesting choice.
What do the lurkers think about these ideas?

I think you are over thinking it. The start needs to be balanced.
But if you are going to go with a jungle food go with a jungle pig.

Hmmm yeah a jungle banana does mean you need both Calendar and IW, whereas jungled pig allows for that choice between IW and Calendar.
I mean I'm going to balance all the starts. Don't think I'm overthinking it because I want to have fun and present a fun choice while also being as balanced as possible.

I can't recall if there are any calender lux that give a bonus if settle on? So giving people a choice between a plain hill and jungle banana seems fine (but if they know the jungle banana loses a food resource then its proabably the wrong choice), but i dont see what the choice is if you offer polaind hill, jungle banana or jungle gems to settle on? The effect on tech path is an inherently different choice: and not a difficult one either.
Might want to look at PBEM17, Plako gave a similar choice to each player.

Sugar does. It would give a choice between a PH and a 3f cap without sacrificing a banana or a pig.
So a jungled pig is unlikely to be settled on. A sugar is more likely to be a tougher decision.
What about a jungled sugar in the cap? Give them the option between the PH and 3f cap and also give them a jungled gems outside the cap BFC nearby to still provoke the IW tech decision? I like that.
I'll look back at PBEM 17 too

Ah yes, Plako gave everyone a PH to settle on, but they had to choose to move to it. The settler started on flatland. Moving to the PH did not lose any of the food in the BFC. I could do something similar and give everyone the choice to SIP on flat land, move to jungled sugar, or move to a PH. in each case they would retain their food resources though.

Choice between sugar and plains hill is interesting, but it is worth pointing out in all cases that settling on flatland is usually the wrong move.
Could I suggest that when you give the players that choice, you defog what is needed to make an informed choice? That might mean defogging more than they would usually see on t0. On top of that, it might be worth considering making different food types availabke for either move and not keeping the same food for either Move.

Yes I was planning on making sure that the initial screenshot I give them will have more defogged. Also a variety of foods, but with the food totals still adding up.
