Here is what I have for a map. I made a few tweaks from the random start and I'm willing to make a couple more. Feedback appreciated.

The players seem to only want 18 combos generated, but with them adding a 5th player, I generated 24 anyway.

Thoughts: Surprisingly flat in places. Looks decent, though some players have nothing but AH food. All bodies of water can be connect via forts and cities. strat resources are balanced well enough for copper, horse, iron, doubt the rest really matter. I think the only change I would do, is that china on the plains hill, think it's china, has grass cow and grass hill sheep. I'd probably swap one of those food resources for an irrigated rice or wheat, and maybe move the ivory a bit closer (or give them a furs within 6 tiles). Everyone has at least 1 metal happy other than that civ they can get with a little bit of effort.
I think those are the only two changes (happy and AH>grain) I'd really consider. Just means another 7 need to be removed, right?
My ratings of the combos, with empty lines demarcating the ones I think we have to cut on the top and bottom. IMO we are looking for a clump of 7 or 8 with the smallest difference between top and bottom, plus the next 2-3 below them to round out the set of 10.

I think you should scrap india if there are a bunch of starts that require AH to get an improved food resource and others that only need Agri, other than that the list looks fine IMO.
It's reasonable to cut India, since it's hard to judge its power, but I think there is only one start that has trouble with India's starting techs. That's the China start, which has both PH plant and also just AH food. Two notes about this: 1) You suggested replacing one of the AH resources with a grain anyway, and 2) They would likely prefer an EXP choice over India anyway due to their PH-next-to-PF setup.
The Ottoman start is the other one with only AH food, and it can get AH via hunting just 1 turn (1 beaker, actually) behind when the worker would like to start improving the pig. So it's not a big issue there. In reply to your map comments: I am a bit hesitant to buff China further since they have the only plains hill start, already. I did upgrade their plains hill sheep to a grass hill sheep previously. I'm good with giving them a fur, though. My plan is to replace their second-closest wine with it - the one to the northwest of their capital. |
